The diet was founded by Loren Cordain and his book quickly became a bestseller.

Put simply, followers of the diet must eat like our ancestors would have – so dairy, refined sugar and cereal grains are out, fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs and grass-fed meat is in.

Sounds healthy and sensible – but Rachel Eden, dietitian at Bupa UK Health Clinics is not so sure.

She had next to nothing positive to say about the diet in damning comments made to Express.co.uk.

Rachel said: “This simply isn’t a sustainable way of losing weight.

“Though the idea of cutting out refined sugars, processed foods and excess salt is great, carbohydrates are a necessary part of our food intake.

“Following this diet for any length of time is likely to lead to deficiencies and health problems.

“Followers are likely to lose weight initially (simply by the process of calorie restriction). However, when they return to a normal pattern of eating, the weight will likely return and this then continues the unhealthy cycle of dieting.

“As other leading experts, such as the British Dietetic Association, have said: If we want to mimic our ancestors, we would be far better off copying their physical activity levels than guessing what their diets were like.”

The NHS is also not a fan of Paleo, calling it a “fad diet”, with “several limitations”.

On the NHS Knowledge Service website, the page on Paleo says: “Low calorie, low salt diets are expected to have an effect on weight and blood pressure in people who are overweight or have high blood pressure.

“This somewhat extreme 1500 calorie diet in healthy young volunteers appears hard to tolerate.

“It is not clear if a “caveman diet” has any specific advantage beyond the modest weight loss.

“By excluding calcium it may also be harmful for some people too.”

The comments on Paleo come after one nutrition consultant recommended the 5:2 diet as a positive way to shed weight.

Robert Brennan advised intermittent fasting is not only good for losing weight, it will also help correct insulin sensitivity.
