In a shock statement, leading doctors and nurses said eating more fat will reverse Britain’s obesity and diabetes epidemics.

Today the makers of the Atkins diet have come out in support of their claims, agreeing current health guidelines are based on flawed science.

Linda O’Byrne, International Nutritionist for the dietary regime which is centred on a low-carbohydrate approach to nutrition, said there are many health benefits to a high-fat diet.

She said: “Eating full fat foods, even those with saturated fat, have been shown to lower blood triglycerides and optimise cholesterol levels.

“It’s the wrong mix of nutrients and having a diet that’s high in refined, sugary carbohydrates which have been shown to adversely affect health rather than inclusion of dietary fat.

“The current guidelines to eat a lower fat diet aren’t helping to reduce the rise in obesity levels in the UK.

“We agree with the report by the NOF and the Public Health Collaboration.

“Including full fat foods in a diet, such as avocado, cheese and eggs, is important for overall nutritional health.

Linda continued: “Atkins has seen, and science can prove, that including dietary fat is an essential nutrient whereas refined carbs have little nutritional benefit.

“It’s the refined, sugary carbs that negatively affect metabolic factors which may lead to heart disease, stroke and other health conditions.”

In a statement released yesterday, the National Obesity Forum said it was time to ‘bring back the fat’ with ‘real food’ like steak, eggs, butter and full-fat milk.

Leading doctors and scientists said popular ‘low fat’ and ‘proven to lower cholesterol’ messages have had a disastrous impact on public health.

The bombshell report is the first to unite dozens of pieces of research that shatter the myth that ‘low fat’ is good. The report’s authors also called for an urgent overhaul of dietary advice.

The Atkins diet is a low-calorie regime generally recommended for weight loss.

It was promoted by Dr Robert C Atkins, a physician who wrote the best-selling book about the regimen in 1972.

The programme was originally condemned by health authorities due to its high fat content, but the diet has been handed some official credence in recent years.
