What is the Mediterranean diet? The miracle feast YOU should enjoy for a longer life [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

It’s said those who eat a Mediterranean-style diet are 37 per cent less likely to die than those who don’t.

Previously, it was believed cholesterol-lowering drugs such as statins were the most effective way of combating heart disease.

But what foods make up this increasingly popular diet?

This comes after Dr Chris Steele discussed the diet on This Morning.

To start, make sure the basis of your meals are starchy carbohydrates.

This means eating bread, pasta, rice or potatoes.

Where you can, those wholegrain varieties of bread, and keeping the skins on your potatoes means you’ll get more fibre.

You should also eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

And it’s important you eat a selection of fruit and vegetables within the five portions.

Choose lean protein, including meat, fish, eggs, beans or pulses and other non-dairy sources.

At least two portions of fish should be eaten a week. One portion should be oily, such as salmon or mackerel.

The inclusion of milk and dairy products, such as cheese and yoghurt, are great sources of protein and calcium.

A small amount of food that’s high in fat or sugar can be enjoyed, but these should be eaten less often.

While in the supermarket, choose unsaturated oils and spreads over saturated fats.

These can be eaten in small amounts.

And finally, drink plenty of fluid. The government recommends you drink six to eight glasses a day.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)
