‘Kingdom of Saturn’: New Documentary Dives Deep into NASA’s Amazing Cassini Mission [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

A new documentary looks back at the triumphs of the Cassini probe — which has spent more than a decade revealing the secrets of Saturn — ahead of the spacecraft’s scheduled death dive into the ringed planet.

Cassini captured the public imagination with its stunning images of the gas giant Saturn and its up-close examination of the planet’s flowing ring system. Over the years, the probe discovered new moons around Saturn, and dug deep into the strange environments of the two largest Saturnian satellites.

“Kingdom of Saturn: Cassini’s Epic Quest” reviews the historical figures who laid the groundwork for the mission, the probe’s major discoveries, and how the probe connected with people on Earth. The movie is available to watch now on Amazon. [Cassini’s ‘Grand Finale’ at Saturn: NASA’s Plan in Pictures]

Cassini left Earth in October 1997 as part of the Cassini-Huygens mission, a joint effort by NASA and the European Space Agency (with a leading role played by the Italian Space Agency). The Huygens probe was dropped onto Saturn’s moon Titan in January 2005, about six months after arriving at Saturn. Since 2008, Cassini has been operating on extended scientific missions. Now that the probe is running out of fuel, scientists have decided to crash the probe into Saturn. This will not only provide a close-up glimpse of the planet and its rings, but will also guarantee that the probe will never accidentally crash into one of the planet’s potentially habitable moons.

“Kingdom of Saturn” provides a tour of the planet and its rings, highlighting fascinating details like the hexagonal cloud formation at its north pole, and its extraordinary system of rings, which are 30 million times wider than they are high.

“[Cassini] has traveled nearly 4 billion kilometers [2.48 billion miles], delivered a probe to the surface of a toxic moon, spent 20 Earth years in space, and produced science nine years longer than originally planned,” the film’s narrator says, summarizing some of Cassini’s major accomplishments. “[Cassini] has discovered flowing water where none was expected, phantasmagorical structures on a planet’s icy rings, a weirdly breathing magnetosphere, and a possible abode of life on a tiny world with a startling atmosphere.” [Cassini’s ‘Grand Finale’ Saturn Orbits Explained (Video)]

The movie also shows viewers how Cassini’s investigations of Saturn have not only helped scientists understand Earth’s solar system, but also planetary systems around other stars. Saturn itself is an example of the gas giants that have now been found around thousands of stars, and Cassini has helped scientists better understand how these monsters form.

“The science based on Cassini’s data will go on for decades,” the film’s narrator says.

Since Cassini arrived at Saturn, scientists have found more evidence that the planet’s moons Enceladus and Titan could potentially host life. Enceladus may possess a liquid water ocean beneath its icy surface, with a geologic source of heat. Geysers of water spew up through cracks in the moon’s surface, and Cassini flew through one of the geysers and sampled its composition. Titan’s surface is mostly covered in liquid methane and ethane, rather than water, which means “if anything lives on Titan, it is almost surely not related to life on Earth,” according to the documentary. The documentary dives deep into Cassini’s investigation of these particularly interesting moons.

The documentary doesn’t keep its focus exclusively on space; it covers the historical figures after whom the Cassini and Huygens probes are named, and it touches on the time just before Cassini’s launch when protesters urged NASA and ESA to cancel the mission over fears the launch rocket might explode and release the radioactive material contained inside the probe. (Cassini-Huygens, like many space probes, carried radioactive material as a source of heat and energy.)

Cassini will make its final death dive on Sept. 15, 2017, at 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT). Check out “Kingdom of Saturn” before the world says goodbye to the Saturn probe forever.

Weight loss: Woman sheds pounds WITHOUT using scales or strict diet [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

While strict diet plans can help you tone up and slim down, they can be difficult to maintain.

But one mum found the perfect solution to her weight loss woes, and it didn’t involve restrictive dieting or constant weighing on the scales.

Instagram sensation Nikki Rees explained to Metro.co.uk: “Four months after the baby had arrived, I visited my sister in London for her birthday. I bought a super tight, figure hugging dress, convincing myself that this was exactly what I needed – that if I could squeeze myself into this dress, I would feel good about myself. I got a spray tan, I painted my nails, I blew out my hair and I armed myself with a pair of super strength tummy control Spanx.

“Unfortunately a night that was meant to be so glamorous and so fun, ended up feeling so uncomfortable. By the time my second Bellini arrived, my overly full breastfeeding boobs were on the verge of exploding out of the top of my low cut dress and my tummy had forced its way over the top of my spanks which had now rolled right down, creating weird looking bulges amplified by a too-tight dress.”

Nikki felt so terrible about her body in that moment she refused to take her coat off and sat through the whole dinner with her arms wrapped tightly around her stomach.

She added: “I came home feeling disappointed and not in control of my own body. I decided I wouldn’t spend another second feeling uncomfortable and miserable, that I would never ever wear a pair of Spanx again and that I would never rely on a dress to make me feel good about myself.”

The next day, Nikki posted her very first “fitness” Instagram picture, and has been posting every day ever since.

One of her most recent posts shows her body transformation aged 34 to 36.

But when many of her followers have asked about her diet and weight loss plan, Nikki’s answer is, “there’s nothing really to tell”.

On one reply she wrote: “I don’t follow a plan, I don’t count anything (not macros not calories) I don’t try to cut out food groups or stop eating carbs after 5pm. I don’t do intermittent fasting or flexible dieting or even clean eating.”

Nikki revealed she eats cake “more days than not”, still drinks prosecco and loves a takeaway.

The difference between the before and after picture, Nikki says, is not what those foods do to her body, but what they do to her head.

She wrote alongside the post: “Two years ago eating sweets and takeaways and junk all day would send me into a downward spiral of feeling bad about myself. All that yummy food would actually fuel my EXCUSES to quit exercise, to not bother balancing the treats out with nutritious alternatives. Now, these same foods (and my passion for them) fuel my AMBITION to condition my body.

“If a day happens where I binge eat cake and a tub of butter, I leave it at just that – I day that happened. It doesn’t de-rail my goals like is used to, I don’t see it as a reason to give up but a reason to continue.

“I don’t workout out of guilt – I workout to be GUILT FREE.”

To get into shape, Nikki has been using Kayla Itsines Bikini Body Guide at home for the last two years.

She wrote: “It’s a killer workout program but it’s easy to modify, needs minimal space and equipment – so it’s perfect for a stay at home mum. I generally workout for 28 mins in my living room with my (now) 2-year-old and it just works for me. I’ve definitely grown a huge amount in confidence and now I change up the workouts, add weights or resistance bands, push myself to try new variations of common exercises to keep things interesting and keep my body guessing.”

Nikki started increasing the amount of food she was eating by having between three and five smaller meals every day, but while she doesn’t keep track of calories, she does try to avoid “eating mindlessly” and checks she’s had a good balance of food for the day.

She continued: “In turn my weight has steadily increased over the last 18 months back up to my start weight of 63kg but my body composition is entirely different and so is my body shape.”

Weight loss tips: Nutritionist claims cutting THIS from your diet can help you shed fat [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

Cutting out this one ingredient from your diet can have a drastic effect on your body – helping to cut down on fat, one expert has claimed.

The nutritionist suggested that dieters could benefit from cutting out trans fats from their diets.

These ingredients raise cholesterol – promoting weight gain.

Angela Ginn-Meadow, R.D., also a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, told Women’s Health: “Trans fat increases your overall cholesterol, lowers your ‘good cholesterol,’ and raises your ‘bad cholesterol.’”

Various scientific papers have corroborated the fact that trans fat makes you pile on the pounds – especially around the stomach area.

A study carried out at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine found that trans fat diet induces abdominal obesity in monkeys.

Scientists claimed: “Diets rich in trans fat cause a redistribution of fat tissue into the abdomen and lead to a higher body weight even when the total dietary calories are controlled.”

So even if you are already on a diet, not cutting out trans fats could be undermining your efforts.

What is trans fat?

The NHS saidL “Artificial trans fats can be formed when oil goes through a process called hydrogenation, which makes the oil more solid (known as hardening).

“This type of fat, known as hydrogenated fat, can be used for frying or as an ingredient in processed foods.”

The fats can be added to food to increase their shelf lives.

“However, in recent years many food manufacturers have removed trans fats from their products,” the NHS added.

Where is trans fat found?

The main offenders when it comes to trans fats are biscuits, cakes and pastries.

Fried or battered foods could be full of trans fats – so watch out for your fish and chips.

Many brands of margarine use hydrogenated oils with trans fats – and butter is likely a healthier option.

According to the Cleveland Clinic frozen pizzas also contain around 1 gram of trans fats per slice.

Green tea has been said to help with weight loss for many years, but does the plant really help you slim? Express.co.uk investigated recently.

Green tea, originally from China, is a type of tea that is made from Camellia sinensis leaves.

Unlike other leaves used for black tea – green tea leaves have not withered, which is why they still have their lush green colour.

Health effects of the drink are touted amongst nutritionists and health experts.

Weight loss diet tricks: Scientific study reveals THIS is how to keep the weight OFF [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

A study has revealed the real-life weight loss tricks used by successful dieters.

The reported, titled ‘Weight control behaviours of highly successful weight loss maintainers’, researched the tricks people used to maintain their slimmer figures.

Carried out at the University of Lisbon, in Portugal, scientists asked 388 adults who lost weight to share how they did it.

The experts claimed, “adopting a different (…) set of behavioural strategies is key for achieving success”.

Participants in the study had lost on average 18 kg, or 2st 8lbs, which they had maintained for 28 months, just over two years.

So how did they lose the weight?

Scientists found that the “average dietary intake was 2199 kcal/day, with 33 per cent of energy coming from fat.”

Plus, 78 per cent of successful dieters engaged in levels of moderate and vigorous physical activity for more than 150 minutes a week, or just over two hours.

Those who were most successful in their weight loss also adopted various tactics to aid them.

The most popular for these were “keeping healthy foods at home, consuming vegetables regularly, and having daily breakfast”.

They also embraced walking, weighing themselves regularly, making sure to establish specific goals and cutting could portion size.

Reducing the amount of carbohydrates they ate and adding in more protein was also a favourite tactic among successful dieters.

Yesterday a nutritionist claimed that cutting out this one ingredient from your diet can help you lose weight.

‘We Don’t Planet’ Episode 11: Type II Supernovae [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

‘We Don’t Planet’ Episode 11: Type II Supernovae [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

All stars fuse hydrogen into helium in their cores, and mid-range stars like our sun will go on to fuse helium into carbon and oxygen at the end of their life cycle. But without sufficient mass, that leftover core of carbon and oxygen remains unburnt, and as the star sheds its outer layers in a series of violent eruptions, the core becomes exposed to space as a white dwarf.

But for larger star — those at least eight times more massive than our sun — the pressures are sufficient to continue the fusion process. Carbon and oxygen can fuse into magnesium, silicon, and more. Near the end of their lives, this continual fusion and re-fusion creates an onion-like pattern, with layers of material all fusing at different temperatures.

However, the process reaches a natural tipping point with the formation of iron. Usually the intense gravitational pressures inside a star are balanced by the energy production of fusion; it’s this balance that sustains stars for millions or even billions of years. But the fusion of iron into heavier elements actually takes, rather than gives, energy. So once a sufficient iron core forms, there’s nothing to stop catastrophic gravitational collapse.

The intense pressures shove electrons into the iron atoms, converting any protons into neutrons. Once a solid ball of neutrons forms, degeneracy pressure halts further collapse. The collapsing materials — essentially the entire weight of the star — encounter that almost-impenetrable ball and bounce back, triggering an explosion. The resulting shockwave blossoms into the surrounding system for light-years, and when such supernovae occur in our own galaxy, they are bright enough to sometimes be seen during the day.

“We Don’t Planet” is hosted by Ohio State University astrophysicist and COSI chief scientist Paul Sutterwith undergraduate student Anna Voelker. Produced by Doug Dangler, ASC Technology Services. Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood Sing to Space Station Astronauts (Video) [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

Country music legends Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood serenaded NASA astronauts Jack Fischer and Peggy Whitson — who are both currently on the International Space Station — during a visit to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston on June 29.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being such an inspiration to so many,” Fischer said to Brooks in a video of the encounter.

Whitson tweeted her appreciation of the musical number, writing, “Loved the @garthbrooks serenade today! I hope you enjoyed meeting the #NASAvillage. Be sure to try the mac and cheese in the food lab!”

Brooks and Yearwood visited the Johnson Space Center to talk to the astronauts from mission control. Fischer confessed to being a huge fan of Brooks, noting that Brooks’ song “The River” has been “pretty much my anthem for the last three decades.” The song was even played for Fischer while he was waiting on the launch pad to travel to the space station, he said.

“I think that you have so many great songs and so many great messages,” Fischer told Brooks. “But it’s the heart you put into every performance and the soul that you put into those songs that make them so impactful.”

Brooks and Yearwood then went through a few verses of “The River,” singing into the telephone that links voice communications between the ground and the space station. In the video, Fischer can be seen singing along.

Brooks also took selfies with the two astronauts. “Could this be the longest-distance selfie ever?” he tweeted.

Brooks isn’t the first country star to sing to the astronauts on the orbiting outpost. In 2014, Brad Paisley sent the song “American Flag on the Moon” via tweet to astronaut Reid Wiseman.

See the Effects of Climate Change Across Earth (Video) [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

A new video from the European Space Agency explains how changes in climate are causing sea levels to rise around the world.

There are three main causes for this change in global sea level, according to the video: thermal expansion of oceans, the melting of ice sheets and glaciers, and changes in land-water storage. The agency uses satellite data to measure how much each of these individual components attributes to the sea level increase.

Meltwater from glaciers accounts for about a 6.6 millimeter (0.26 inches) sea level rise every decade, the video says, which accounts for 20 percent of the total change between 2003 and 2013. Greenland’s ice sheet accounts for 8.3 millimeters (0.33 inches), or about 25 percent of the total, while the Antarctic ice sheet contributes 3.6 millimeters (0.14 inches) or 11 percent of the decade total. Changes in land-water storage (such as lakes) contribute 3.3 millimeters (0.13 inches) or 10 percent, and ocean thermal expansion adds 9.9 millimeters (0.39 inches) or 30 percent.

Water expands when it freezes into ice, and contracts when it melts; but above a certain temperature water begins to expand as it warms, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. So as the ocean accumulates “the excess heat caused by greenhouse gas emissions,” its volume increases and the sea level rises.

Scientists can also measure sea level rise independently, using satellite altimeters to determine where on Earth the water is rising most, according to the video. Comparing these measurements with how much each individual component contributes to the sea level rise helps scientists better understand the sea level budget — the discrepancy between how much the water is actually rising and how much it should be rising according to models that take into account the various causes of sea level change.

Green tea weight loss – do these drinks REALLY shrink your waist REVEALED [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

Green tea weight loss – do these drinks REALLY shrink your waist REVEALED [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

Green tea, originally from China, is a type of tea that is made from Camellia sinensis leaves.

Unlike other leaves used for black tea – green tea leaves have not withered, which is why they still have their lush green colour.

Health effects of the drink are touted amongst nutritionists and health experts.

Looking at scientific studies it does seem that a number make a strong link between drinking the herbal tea and weight loss.

A green tea weight loss trial found that green tea had a big effect on weight loss of the patients in the study.

Moderately overweight people where given two drinks each a day.

For one group all were placebos, the other had one serving of green tea while the other had two.

Scientists who carried out the research, in Shanghai, China, found: “We observed a decrease in estimated intra-abdominal fat in the GT3 group,” or the group with two servings of green tea.

They added: “In addition, we found decreases of 1.9 cm in waist circumference and 1.2 kg body weight.”

This is fairly impressive considering the study did not include any other changes in diet or exercise.

A similar study that aimed to measure the effects of green tea on overweight Thai patients found the same thing.

“We conclude that green tea can reduce body weight in obese Thai subjects by increasing energy expenditure and fat oxidation,” the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, at Khon Kaen University found.

The University of Maryland Medical Centre’s Complementary and Alternative Medicine Guide strongly recommends green tea for those looking to boost weight loss.

The paper states: “Clinical studies suggest that green tea extract may boost metabolism and help burn fat.

“One study found that the combination of green tea and caffeine improved weight loss and maintenance in people who were overweight and moderately obese.”

This facility specifically recommends 2 to 3 cups of green tea per day, depending on the brand – or 100 to 750 mg per day of standardised green tea extract.

However, not all studies are in agreement. Others have found no correlation between drinking green tea and weight loss.

Although drinking green tea or taking green tea supplements decreases cholesterol, the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College found, and some studies have observed drinking the tea can reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

So while a certain link cannot be made between green tea and weight loss, it does seem that the relatively cheap drink is likely to have a positive effect on your overall health.

Have you heard of the latest diet that nutritionists claim to offer ‘superior’ weight loss.

The diet involves limiting carbs to 50 grams or less, which puts the body into a state of ketosis.

What Were the First Records of Solar Eclipses? [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

Got your eclipse glasses? People across the United States are counting the days to the arrival of this year’s much-anticipated total solar eclipse on Aug. 21.

This year marks the rare occasion when viewers across the entire U.S. will experience totality — the sun’s path while it is completely blocked by the moon’s shadow. It will be the first total eclipse in nearly 40 years to be visible from the continental U.S., and the first in 99 years with the path of totality traveling from coast to coast in the U.S., from Oregon to South Carolina.

But total solar eclipses themselves are not uncommon, occurring about two to five times every year, on average. And while 2017 sees many gripped by “eclipse fever” for the first time, people have been observing, documenting and describing eclipses for thousands of years. [The 8 Most Famous Solar Eclipses in History]

The first recorded notation referencing an eclipse dates to about 5,000 years ago, according to NASA. Spiral petroglyphs carved on three ancient stone monuments in Ireland at Loughcrew in County Meath, depict alignments of the sun, moon and horizon, and likely represent a solar eclipse that occurred Nov. 30, 3340 B.C., NASA reported.

Irish paleoarchaeologist Paul Griffin suspected that the Neolithic petroglyphs referred to an eclipse, and began investigating them in 1999. Griffin confirmed the eclipse date in 2002 by using the Digital Universe astronomy software to calculate the alignment, which produced a late afternoon eclipse that obscured nearly the entire sun, he wrote in 2002 on the Syzygy Research and Technology website. On the Loughcrew monuments, multiple carvings show dozens of astronomical events, with overlapping concentric circles representing the solar eclipse, and isolated concentric circles indicating a lunar eclipse, according to Griffin.

Nearby, a gruesome find suggested that Neolithic interpretation of the eclipse may have included superstitious fears allayed by human sacrifice. A basin held burned bones from about 48 people, hinting that the eclipse may have been accompanied by a murderous ritual “to ‘save’ the Neolithic ‘sky God’ (Sun) from dying as it descended to the ‘underworld’ at the horizon,” Griffin wrote in 2002.

Other physical records of eclipses persist in carvings on 2,500-year-old clay tablets from ancient Babylonia, one of which described a total solar eclipse seen in the port city of Ugarit in what is now Syria, on May 3, 1375 B.C., according to NASA.

Descriptions of eclipses also appear in records from ancient China, with imperial astronomers reporting eclipses that occurred from the eighth century B.C. to the 15th century A.D., according to a study published in 2005 in the journal Archive for History of Exact Sciences.

In fact, historic records from China inscribed by imperial astronomers include references to 938 solar eclipses dating from the Chunqiu period (771 B.C. to 476 B.C.) to the start of the Ming Dynasty (A.D. 1368 to 1644), of which only a handful have been found to be errors or false reports, the study author reported.

Writings from the ancient Greeks also described solar eclipses, with the lyric poet Archilochus, who lived during the seventh century B.C., commemorating what may have been a total solar eclipse that occurred on April 6, 647 B.C., writing, “Zeus, father of the Olympians, made night from mid-day, hiding the light of the shining Sun, and sore fear came upon men,” according to NASA.

For thousands of years, written descriptions etched on stone and bone, and artists’ interpretations of eclipses were the only means of recording this incredible cosmic event. But in the mid-19th century, an early form of photography known as daguerreotype enabled Johann Julius Friedrich Berkowski to create the first photographic record of a solar eclipse, on July 28, 1851.

Berkowski captured the image — the first to accurately represent the solar corona — in Königsberg in what was then the Roman Empire, now Kaliningrad in Russia. He used a small refracting telescope with a diameter of 2.4 inches (6.1 centimeters) and exposed the daguerreotype plate for 84 seconds, beginning soon after the sun was completely obscured, according to a study published in 2005 in the journal Acta Historica Astronomiae.

Since then, astrophotographers have plied their lenses to capture increasingly detailed views of this cosmic phenomenon, from time-lapse video of a total solar eclipse over Europe on March 20, 2015, caught by the European Space Agency’s Proba-2 satellite, to a stunning “double eclipse” imaged by the Solar Dynamics Observatory on Sept. 1, 2016, when the sun was shadowed simultaneously by both the Earth and the moon.

Photos taken in 2013 by the Curiosity rover on Mars even offered a view of an eclipse as seen from another planet, as the Martian moon Phobos traveled across the sun.

Holly Willoughby weight loss: Has THIS social media snap revealed her trick? [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

Holly Willoughby, 36, posted a stylish snap to her Instagram page recently, but her chic outfit was not what caught the eye of her fans.

The 36-year-old TV presenter posed in black trousers and a cool blue sleeveless shirt in the snap.

Fans were quick to praise the mum-of-three’s physique.

“You look so toned and fit! I think your new look is great!!,” one fan wrote.

Another begged: “Please let us know Holly’s secret to getting fit and healthy.”

However, one commenter seemed to have an idea as to how Holly keeps her figure trim.

They said: “Looking amazing @hollywilloughby . Heard you do Pilates. I too do Pilates and I have never felt better! I eat like a horse but have totally trimmed down!”

It seems Holly’s fan is right, as one personal trainer as previously come forward to claim she trained the presenter in the art of Pilates.

Director of London-based Body Control Pilates, Lynne Robinson, helped the presenter on her journey.

She told The Sun: “I worked with Holly for several months, teaching her privately at the home once a week.

“Holly had postnatal matt work classes which concentrated on strengthening and toning her core.

“The exercises help trim the waist and flatten the stomach.”

Whatever workouts she may indulge in, the This Morning presenter is firm that she will never discuss her diet and weight loss tips because she has interviewed so many people affected by eating disorders.

Speaking honestly to Prima Magazine, she explained: “I don’t want to encourage eating disorders. I try not to focus too much on my appearance. As long as I’m being healthy, that’s good enough for me.

“I’m quite active and I try not to let the way I look be the main focus because it’s not the important thing.”

“I actually avoid talking about my diet and exercise regime because I have interviewed so many people affected by eating disorders.

NASA’s 1st Mars Rover Landed 20 Years Ago Today [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

NASA’s 1st Mars Rover Landed 20 Years Ago Today [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

Mars exploration took a big leap 20 years ago today.

On July 4, 1997, NASA’s Pathfinder mission touched down on the Red Planet, delivering an eponymous lander and a small rover called Sojourner — the agency’s first wheeled Mars craft — to the surface.

Pathfinder was the first NASA mission to reach Mars successfully since the twin Viking 1 and Viking 2 landers/orbiters in the mid-1970s, and its success helped pave the way for a robotic Red Planet invasion. In the two decades since, eight other NASA robots have reached Mars, and five of them remain active today. [Occupy Mars: History of Robotic Red Planet Missions (Infographic)]

“Pathfinder initiated two decades of continuous Mars exploration, bringing us to the threshold of sample return and the possibility of humans on the first planet beyond Earth,” Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA’s Mars Exploration Program at the agency’s headquarters in Washington, said in a statement.

Pathfinder launched on Dec. 4, 1996, embarking on an eight-month cruise to the Red Planet. After the lander touched down, the six-wheeled, microwave-oven-size Sojourner rover rolled down a ramp onto Mars’ red dirt.

The images beamed home by the lander and rover racked up 200 million hits on the still-young internet between July 4 and July 8, 1997 — a traffic record at the time, NASA officials said.

The Pathfinder lander was designed to operate for one month, and Sojourner for just one week. But both robots kept going for three months, gathering data about Mars’ atmosphere and climate, as well as the planet’s geology and interior.

The scientific bounty notwithstanding, the $264 million Pathfinder mission was primarily a technology demonstration that helped usher in a new era of relatively cheap, fast-development planetary efforts, NASA officials said.

“We needed to invent or re-invent 25 technologies for this mission in less than three years, and we knew that if we blew the cost cap, the mission would be cancelled,” Pathfinder flight system manager and deputy project manager Brian Muirhead, of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said in the same statement.

“Everybody who was part of the Mars Pathfinder project felt we’d done something extraordinary, against the odds,” Muirhead added.

NASA reused these new technologies — which included Sojourner, advanced computers and an airbag landing system — in its next rover mission, which sent the golf-cart-size twins Spirit and Opportunity to the Red Planet.

Spirit and Opportunity landed a few weeks apart in January 2004 and soon began searching for signs of past water activity on the Red Planet. Both robots found plenty of such evidence, then kept rolling far beyond their three-month warranties: Spirit stopped communicating with Earth in March 2010, and Opportunity is still going strong today.

The other NASA robots that reached Mars after Pathfinder are the Phoenix lander and Curiosity rover, which touched down in May 2008 and August 2012, respectively; Mars Global Surveyor; Mars Odyssey; the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO); and the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN Mission (MAVEN). The latter four are orbiters that arrived at the Red Planet in September 1997, October 2001, March 2006 and September 2014, respectively. (Two other NASA Red Planet missions, the Mars Climate Orbiter and the Mars Polar Lander, launched in the late 1990s but did not reach their destinations successfully.)

Opportunity, Curiosity, Odyssey, MRO and MAVEN are still operating today. So are Europe’s Mars Express orbiter, India’s Mars Orbiter Mission and the European/Russian ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. If all goes according to plan, these robots will be joined at Mars by several other spacecraft in the next few years: NASA plans to launch a lander called InSight in 2018, and both NASA and Europe (with Russia as a partner) plan to send life-hunting rovers toward the Red Planet in 2020.

Pathfinder’s landing isn’t the only big NASA event that occurred on July 4. On that date in 2005, for example, the agency’s Deep Impact probe slammed an impactor into Comet Tempel 1 to investigate the icy body’s composition. And on July 4 of last year, NASA’s Juno spacecraft arrived in orbit around Jupiter.

SpaceX Scrubs Satellite Launch Just Before Liftoff Again [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

SpaceX Scrubs Satellite Launch Just Before Liftoff Again [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

For the second day in a row, SpaceX scrubbed the launch of a communications satellite with just 10 seconds left on the countdown clock.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket was scheduled to lift off at 8:35 p.m. EDT today (July 3; 0035 GMT on July 4) from Pad 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and carry the 13,000-lb. (6,000 kilograms) Intelsat 35e satellite to orbit.

But controllers called off the liftoff with just 10 seconds to go — just as they did yesterday (July 2), Intelsat 35e’s original launch date.

Yesterday’s abort was triggered by a potential issue with the Falcon 9’s guidance system and/or the hardware that supports it, SpaceX representatives said yesterday. It was not immediately clear what the cause was today, Falcon 9 principal integration engineer John Insprucker said during SpaceX’s launch webcast.

“Standing down today due to a violation of abort criteria, vehicle/payload in good health, next launch opportunity tomorrow, July 4th!” SpaceX representatives said via Twitter this evening.

Tomorrow’s launch window opens in the evening, if SpaceX decides the Falcon 9 is ready to fly. Whenever the launch occurs, you can watch it live here on Space.com, courtesy of SpaceX.

Intelsat 35e is ultimately headed for geostationary orbit, about 22,300 miles (35,800 kilometers) above Earth. The satellite’s weight and faraway destination mean that the Falcon 9 first stage will not attempt a landing after liftoff; it won’t have enough fuel left over to steer its way back down for a soft landing, Insprucker said.

Today’s launch was supposed to take place at 7:37 p.m. EDT (2337 GMT), but SpaceX pushed the attempt back to 8:35 p.m. EDT — the very end of the window — to give bad weather a chance to clear.

THIS keto diet plan offers ‘superior’ weight loss – according to Australian dietician [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

The keto diet is like the once popular Atkins diet, in that it promotes eating low carb foods.

The diet involves limiting carbs to 50 grams or less, which puts the body into a state of ketosis.

While the Atkins diet works in phases, the keto simply involves cutting the amount of carbs you eat right down.

For that reason it is much more simple for dieters to follow – and now one nutritious hs claimed the diet helps with superior weight loss and could help with epilepsy and seizures.

Susie Burrell is a dietician and nutritionist with two Honours degrees in Nutrition & Dietetics and Psychology.

She has told dieters that there are many benefits to the diet plan.

She wrote for news.com of the keto diet: “With their superior weight loss and associated reductions in inflammation in the body, there are a number of benefits, particularly for individuals with high blood glucose levels, fatty liver and significant amounts of weight to lose.”

She also said: “There is no evidence to show that keto diets are damaging to the body.”

She advocates avoiding foods like bread, cereals, pasta, rice, sugar and even fruit during the diet to quickly drop weight.

The theory is that if dieters train your body to run off fat then they can achieve better weight loss.

What is ketosis?

Ketosis is a state that the body goes into if it doesn’t have it usual source of energy – carbohydrates.

The body then turns to ‘ketones’ to create energy.

Ketones are created from the liver and are converted from fat.

So how do you know you’re in ketosis?

It is possible to measure it by testing urine, blood or breath samples, but there are also some telltale symptoms which don’t require any testing.

Look for a dry mouth and increased third, increased urination and ‘keto breath’ – this is due to a ketone body called acetone escaping via the breath and can make a person; breath smell fruity.

Express.co.uk explored the possible side effects of the diet.

Weight loss: Why eating MORE carbs could be the secret to transforming YOUR body [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

Carbohydrates have been largely demonised in the world of weight loss.

Many people try out low carb diets in a bid to shed the pounds.

Some studies have even suggested they can reverse Type 2 diabetes.

But one nutritionist thinks carbs have an unfair reputation, insisting that we should eat more of them to achieve weight loss.

Australian nutritionist and dietitian Susie Burrell says carbs are an essential part of our diets.

Not eating enough of the food group, says Burrell, could actually be hampering your weight loss efforts.

She told Body and Soul: “An inability to lose weight, despite eating a low carb diet is a clear sign that your total carbohydrate intake is too low, especially if you exercise regularly.”

“As a general rule of thumb, intakes of less than 80-100 grams of carbohydrates each day, for someone exercising regularly is too low and as such may be the reason you are not getting the shifts on the scales you are hoping for.”

Burrell advises eating 20-30 grams of carbs within an hour of a high intensity workout in order to properly fuel your muscles.

This is because your body needs glucose to burn fat when you exercise.

If you restrict carbs too heavily, you also risk slowing down your basal metabolic rate.

This in turn spikes your cravings for sugary foods which can lead to bingeing.

Burrell said: “Over time these cravings may relieve but you may also find you no longer feel hungry at all, as your metabolic rate slows to manage the lack of carbohydrate.”

Another unpleasant side effect of a low carb diet is bad breath, which occurs when the body goes into the state of ketosis.

Burrell explained: “[This] is the body’s way of surviving when carbs are low by converting fat stores into a fuel that can be burnt.

“Someone in ketosis has a very specific smell and may have terrible breath.”

Despite encouraging carb intake, the nutritionist warned against stuffing your face with pizza, white bread and pasta.

The dietician insists it’s the good sources of carbs we should be eating.

Plant based foods like rice cereal, fruit and starchy vegetables are the best for releasing glucose into the blood stream, according to Burrell.

How Humans Have Captured Starlight – A Brief History (Video) [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

A new video from the European Southern Observatory’s video podcast, ESOcast, takes viewers through the history of the various types of sensors that humans have used to record starlight. The video is hosted by ESO astronomer and ESOcast host Joe Liske (aka Dr. J).

The earliest of these sensors shouldn’t be that hard to guess, according to Liske: It was the human eye.

“It wasn’t until the early 17th century that we started to use a tool to help us see fainter and more distant stars,” Liske said in the video. That first tool was, of course, the telescope. GalileoGalilei was one of the first scientists ever known to have used a telescope, which he used back in 1609 to peer into the cosmos.

A telescope helped Galileo identify Jupiter’s four largest moons, revealing that Earth was not the only planet with a lunar companion. According to Liske, this discovery “forever changed our view of our place in the universe.”

Unfortunately for Galileo and his contemporaries, it wasn’t yet possible to use a machine to capture what they saw through the telescope, and scientists of the day had to draw what they saw.

It wasn’t until about 230 years later that astronomers could use photographic plates to detect and record light from space.

“Photographic plates can be exposed for hours on end, allowing astronomers to detect much fainter objects than was possible by eye,” Liske said. The plates also gave astronomers the first “faithful” image of the stars, which eliminated the human error involved in a sketch.

Still, scientists pushed for more sensitive recording devices as technology got better. When electronics “entered the picture,” according to Liske, photomultiplier vacuum tubes again changed the way scientists looked at the night sky.

The tubes, which were available in the 1930s, convert a photon into an electron, which is multiplied to generate an electrical current and amplify the photon’s signal. The photomultipliers were about 10 times more sensitive to light than photographic plates, according to Liske. But they were difficult to use for imaging purposes.

When digital imaging became possible in the 1970s, that was no longer a problem. Digital imaging uses light-sensitive semiconductors called charged coupled devices (CCDs). They’re made up of a “thin layer of silicon that is divided into millions of tiny squares, each representing a pixel.”

We still use CCDs today, though they have gotten much more sensitive than they were in the 1970s — the ones used for astronomy have also become much larger, according to Liske. Today, they can be as large as 9,000 by 9,000 pixels (or 81 megapixels) and can be put together to create a camera able to capture more than a billion pixels.

“As the technology continues to develop, we can look forward to future detectors that will be even better at capturing the faint drizzle of light from the cosmos,” Liske said.

Weight loss: Woman shed SIX stone after pregnancy with THIS diet plan [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

Louise Yates, 34, ballooned to a size 22 and had “no energy”, but decided to overhaul her lifestyle and slim down.

Speaking about her life before the weight loss, Louise said: “Before losing the weight I felt so sluggish and my feet used to burn if I used to go shopping or walk for a while.

“I had no energy and used to dread being invited out socially due to the stress of having to find something to wear, I felt self-conscious and shy, and pretty much miserable.”

Describing the turning point that spurred her weight loss, Louise said: “March 2012 I was feeling miserable, I realised I was getting bigger and bigger and things had got out of control. I decide enough was enough, and it was time to make a lifestyle change.

“At the time I was choosing quick fix meals like takeaways maybe four times a week, I have always enjoyed my food and would eat huge portions – enough for two people.”

Louise decided to try a combination of SlimFast and exercise to lose weight.

She explained: “I decided to give SlimFast a go because I had tried every other diet going and I was unable to stick to any of them.

“SlimFast was a great option because I needed to be able to quickly grab things for lunch and breakfast rather than having to think about it. SlimFast took away all the hassle of deciding what to eat and when but it still gave me the opportunity to have things I enjoyed for snacks and dinner whilst sticking within my calories.

“I was shocked me at first to see how many calories I was consuming in some of my favourite foods.”

Revealing her exercise plan, Louise said: “I’ve shocked myself by taking up running and I’m so proud of myself. I can now run 5k thanks to my perseverance.

“I also go to Clubbercise (cardio in the dark with glow sticks – great fun!) and Poundfit (drumming cardio using weighted drum sticks), which since losing weight I have been even more confident go to.”

Starting out at 17st 5lbs, Louise got down to 11st albs in June 2014 – but gained five stone whilst pregnant.

After turning her life around with a sensible diet and exercise plan, Louise has now lost six stone, and is a dress size 12.

She said: “I never imagined I would be a size 12, I’m now comfortable in my own skin and feel fantastic.

“I still follow the SlimFast plan and have the occasional treat at weekends, which allows me to have a balanced life style.

“Family have noticed my weight loss, my partner met me when I was a size 22, and now I’m a size 12 he feels like he’s dating a new person as I look so different.”

Weight loss: Are you making THIS common mistake when it comes to shedding the pounds? [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

Weight loss: Are you making THIS common mistake when it comes to shedding the pounds? [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

There is an overwhelming amount of advice when it comes to losing weight.

The conflicting information can lead to confusion about which method is the most effective.

From which food groups to eat and when to eat them, from what exercise and how much, there are many variables which can help you along your road to health.

But there are some mistakes many of us are making which can prevent weight loss.

One of the first areas people are usually advised to control if they want to shed pounds is calorie intake.

The calories in-calories out deficit can lead to sustainable weight loss, according to experts.

Women are recommended to eat 2,000 calories per day to maintain weight on average, while men are advised to eat 2,500.

For weight loss of one pound per week, these numbers fall to 1,500 and 2,000 respectively.

But taking this method too far will have the opposite effect.

A survey of 2,000 British adults discovered that 44 per cent didn’t know what their daily calorie intake should be.

Eating too few calories is one of the major mistakes people make when it comes to downsizing.

Not consuming enough calories can significantly slow down your metabolism, having the opposite effect to the one you desire.

A 2008 study published in the Environmental health Prevention Medicine journal found short-term energy restriction led to a significant decrease in basal metabolic rate (BMR) for participants.

Another study published in 2015 found eating too few calories leads to a fall in insulin secretion and body fluid balance.

So how many calories should you eat to lose weight? That comes down to the individual, according to experts.

The NHS has a free BMI calculator to give you a better idea of how many calories you should be eating each day.

Dietician Elizabeth Ward told Woman’s Day: “Determining the right number of calories for your body is highly educational if you have never paid much mind to calories before.

”It’s great to be aware of calorie needs because it forces you to measure portions, so if you can learn how many portions you need for a healthy weight, you can quit thinking about every calorie.”

Dietician Erin Palinski-Wade said: “Be aware of your total calories needs and intake. Focus on a meal plan rich in fiber, plant-based fats, and lean proteins to promote satiety, which will naturally help you to control your portions and lose weight while taking in nutrients that promote health.”

As a general guideline, women shouldn’t dip below the 1,500 calories per day recommendation and men should stick to at least 2,000.

Otherwise your body may go into ‘starvation mode’ and refuse to lose weight.

TRAPPIST-1 Planets: How Were They Visualized? (Video) [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

A new video from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory explains the art of visualizing astronomical data and concepts, like what the TRAPPIST-1 planets may look like.

Space art like this is essential to public understanding of astronomy, as it helps people picture other worlds, said Tim Pyle, a multimedia producer at IPAC (Infrared Processing and Analysis Center), a science and data center for astrophysics and planetary science at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

“Artist concepts are going to be the public face for some of these objects, and there’s a lot of responsibility that comes with that,” Pyle said in the video.

Pyle works with Robert Hurt, a visualization scientist at IPAC, to illustrate “regions where stars form and cores, the stellar remnants after a star like our sun dies leaving a white dwarf,” are created, as Hurt explains it. The two also tackle a “neutron star that’s left at the core of a supernova explosion … supermassive black holes that sit in the cores of galaxies” and more. [The 7 Earth-Size Planets of TRAPPIST-1 in Pictures]

The two worked together on visualizations of the TRAPPIST-1 planets, a planetary system located 12 parsecs (about 39 light-years) away from the solar system. The planets, which are named for the TRAPPIST telescope used in their discovery, orbit a star that is only about 8 percent the mass of Earth’s sun, according to NASA.

Using data from the TRAPPIST telescope, NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope and other telescopes that collected information on the planetary system, Pyle and Hurt created images of what the seven planets that scientists know orbit the star might look like, the two said in the video.

Telescope data tells Hurt and Pyle about the planet’s diameter, orbital period and whether it’s tidally locked, suggesting what it might look like, the duo explained.

“If it’s less dense than the Earth, it might have more volatiles, like water, on it, which is why two of the TRAPPIST planets were shown as water worlds,” Hurt said. “If it has a higher density than Earth, then it’s probably a little more rocky.”

All of the decisions that go into space illustrations like these are made with the direction and advice of scientists, Pyle said in the video.

He and Hurt said they are a perfect space artist team. Hurt has a Ph.D. in astrophysics, and Pyle is an artist “with a Hollywood background.”

“We kind of cover each other’s blind spots a bit,” Hurt said.

Nigella Lawson weight loss: Instagram picture SHOCKS fans – is THIS exercise her secret? [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

Nigella Lawson posted the image to Instagram, showing the 57-year-old celebrity chef filming for her latest series.

The chef could be seen in a kitchen, cooking over a hob while a camera man caught the action on film.

She captioned the image: “Day 2 on set with @robinfox78 on camera for new series, At My Table #atmytable”.

However, a number of fans were more interested in Nigella’s figure than her latest series.

One Instagram user, Hoberhobs, commented beneath the image: “@nigellalawson, you look very slim and so beautiful!!”

Another wrote: “Wow. You have lost so much weight”.

Nigella is known for her curvaceous figure, as much a part of her appeal as her cooking.

However, the presenter and author, who indulges in avocados – did admit to losing some weight in recent years.

Yoga is part of the method Nigella uses to stay slim.

She told Good Housekeeping: “It’s certainly true my weight went up – that happens in life sometimes.

However, she was adamant she has never dieted –  crediting her view of food for her healthy look.

She told Good Housekeeping Magazine in 2015: “I wouldn’t want a life where I lived on chia seed pudding, just as I wouldn’t want to live where I lived on eggs Benedict or steak and chips.

“I love kale and I’m an avocado obsessive. But life is about balance, it’s not about being smug. You don’t eat things because you think they’re good for you.

“I have never been on a diet to try to lose weight. I feel like I haven’t lost weight, but I’m possibly in better shape. I am doing a rather slow form of yoga now called lyengar.”

Nigella did also credit an operation for her weight loss – but this was not an intentional effort.

According to the Telegraph in 2015, Nigella said: “I had a very glamorous operation – a double bunionisation. I couldn’t walk to the fridge afterwards and, actually, it’s quite a good diet.”

White Dwarf’s Pull on Red Giant Triggers Thermonuclear Blasts (Video) [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

White Dwarf’s Pull on Red Giant Triggers Thermonuclear Blasts (Video) [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

A new video shows the explosive reaction when a dense stellar corpse sucks up material from a pulsating dead star.

Thevideo, which uses data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, shows the give and take (but mostly take) between the dense object, called a white dwarf, and the pulsating red giant star in the far-off R Aquarii (R Aqr for short) system.

The R Aqr system is located 710 light-years from Earth, and it is known as a symbiotic star because, as with symbiotic relationships in organisms here on Earth, the two stars interact. But in the case of R Aqr, it’s a completely one-sided relationship; only the white dwarf benefits.

As the new video from the Chandra observatory shows, the white dwarf siphons material from the red giant onto its surface. This happens because white dwarf stars are small and dense, and therefore create a strong gravitational field, and because there’s a big temperature difference between the two stars, according to a statement from the Chandra research team. [Earth to Be Consumed By Red Giant Star (In 5 Billion Years)]

Although the white dwarf is about 10,000 times fainter than the red giant, it is much hotter, with a surface temperature of about 20,000 kelvins (35,540 degrees Fahrenheit, or 19,727 degrees Celsius). The red giant, by comparison, has a surface temperature of only about 3,000 kelvins (4,940 degrees F, or 2,727 degrees C).

Eventually, the white dwarf will build up enough material from the red giant on its surface to trigger a thermonuclear fusion of hydrogen, which results in a nova — an explosion that sends the outer layers of the star into space at tens of millions of miles per hour.

Rings around the star offer a history of previous such explosions. Scientists believe an outer ring was formed in 1073 and that an inner ring is the result of an explosion in the 1770s, Chandra representatives said in the statement.

Astronomers have been using the Chandra observatory to study this system since soon after the telescope first launched in 1999, and observations show that jets of X-ray emissions are moving away from R Aqr at 1.4 billion to 1.9 billion mph (2.25 billion to 3.06 billion km/h). These explosions are slower than those in 1073 and the 1770s that created the rings, and scientists from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) estimate that these “blobs of X-ray emission” are from eruptions in the 1950s and 1980s that were much less energetic than the nova in 1073, according to the Chandra statement.

After scientists detected a new jet of X-rays, researchers from the CfA theorized in 2007 that there had been another explosion in the 2000s.. Assuming that these less energetic explosions happen every few decades, then the star system is due to shed its outer layers again within the next ten years, according to the statement.

Scientists don’t expect another eruption as powerful as the novas that created the rings to occur until the 2470s.

SpaceX’s Final Falcon 9 Design Coming This Year, 2 Falcon Heavy Launches in 2018 [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

SpaceX’s Final Falcon 9 Design Coming This Year, 2 Falcon Heavy Launches in 2018 [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

WASHINGTON — SpaceX intends to launch a final upgrade to the Falcon 9 rocket, known as the Block 5, later this year, and has three Falcon Heavy launches planned for the next 18 months.

Gwynne Shotwell, president and chief operating officer of SpaceX, confirmed in a June 22 appearance on “The Space Show” online radio show that the Block 5 version of the Falcon 9 will be the “final design spin,” following just a few months after an “incremental” Block 4 version that will be more of a transition model.

“We are flying Block 3s right now,” Shotwell said. “Block 4s start flying shortly, and then Block 5 at the end of this year. We definitely have gotten better [at] more smooth introducing of change. You don’t see the big impacts to production we’ve had before when we’ve changed vehicle designs.” [The Rockets and Spaceships of SpaceX (Images)]

SpaceX Chief Executive Elon Musk had previously stated in an online question-and-answer session in October 2016 that Block 5 would be the final upgrade to the Falcon 9 design. The Falcon 9 Block 5 is expected to be far more reusable than the Block 3. Shotwell said a Block 5 booster could relaunch ” a dozen or so times.” The Block 3, by comparison, has an estimated life of two or three missions.

Shotwell said the Block 5 version of the Falcon 9 won’t need refurbishing, but will mainly undergo inspections prior to launch, streamlining the process compared to the first reused boosters.

“We’ve worked a lot on this particular vehicle. A lot of the active components, the valves, have been redesigned and requalified for much higher levels and much longer duration,” she said.

Despite describing the Block 5 as the final version of the Falcon 9, Shotwell hinted at the possibility of a future version of the rocket that could use the Raptor engines designed for transportation to Mars. Shotwell said Raptor, a liquid methane and oxygen engine for SpaceX’s interplanetary spaceship, has undergone “many dozens of tests” and is progressing well.

“The original idea for those engines were to serve as a propulsion system for the big Mars system, but we are looking at the utility of it on the Falcon program,” she said. [SpaceX’s Interplanetary Transport System for Mars Colonization in Images]

Shotwell said Arabsat will be the first customer for the Falcon Heavy when it begins commercial service in 2018, following a demonstration mission later this year.

“We’ll be flying Arabsat to [geostationary transfer orbit] on the second Falcon Heavy flight, and then we’ll be flying STP-2, an Air Force mission,” she said.

Saudi Arabia-based Arabsat purchased a Falcon Heavy launch for Arabsat-6A, a Ku- and Ka-band satellite from Lockheed Martin, in 2015. The Air Force contracted the Space Test Program-2 launch in 2012. Shotwell described both those missions as happening “early next year.”

Delays with the Falcon Heavy cost SpaceX two of the rocket’s customers: ViaSat and Inmarsat. ViaSat’s ViaSat-2 and Inmarsat’s S-band European Aviation Network (EAN) satellite both shifted to Ariane 5 rockets from European launch provider Arianespace. ViaSat-2 launched June 1, and Inmarsat’s EAN satellite launches June 28.

SpaceX still needs Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station to finish repairs before the Falcon Heavy can launch. That infrastructure, often referred to as Pad 40, took damage last September when a Falcon 9 exploded during a fueling procedure prior to a static-fire test.

Shotwell said Pad 40 remains on track for completion later this summer. Once reactivated, SpaceX plans to return Falcon 9 launches there and use Launch Complex 39A for Falcon Heavy.

SpaceX does not intend to fly any customers on the maiden flight of the Falcon Heavy. Shotwell said the mission will demonstrate some capabilities needed for national security launches, such as an extended coasting of the second stage.

The first Falcon Heavy launch will use two previously-flown Falcon 9 first stage boosters attached to a new center core optimized to support the triple-booster configuration.

To date, SpaceX has launched two Falcon 9s with “flight proven” first stage boosters, flying SES-10 in March and BulgariaSat-1 June 23. Shotwell said three to four more customers are interested in using flight-proven launchers this year. If SpaceX launches a minimum of three additional pre-flown boosters this year, along with two pre-flown boosters on Falcon Heavy, that would amount to seven reused rockets for 2017. Shotwell said SpaceX was originally shooting for six reused boosters this year.

Shotwell said in March that SpaceX would seek to use pre-flown boosters as a means of easing the strain on Falcon 9 production. Production was slowed by the September 2016 anomaly, but has increased significantly since then, she said.

“Three years ago or so we were producing six rockets a year,” she said. “This year we are going to produce more than 20.”

Shotwell said SpaceX desires to eventually fly pre-flown boosters “far more regularly” than new models. She said some customers are waiting for SpaceX to certify pre-flown boosters for national security space missions and for crewed missions before agreeing to use them.

Lisa Riley weight loss: Star flaunts slim figure in shocking Instagram before and after [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

Lisa Riley has shocked the nation with her incredible weight loss in recent years.

The 40-year-old Emmerdale star was known for her role as Mandy Dingle in the television soap opera, posted an image to her social media to celebrate.

The Loose Women panellist has shrunk from a size 30 to a size 12 over the course of a year.

She lost a staggering 10 stone, an incredible achievement.

The star, who has 42,200 followers on Instagram, posted the inspiring before and after image to her account two days ago.

The left-hand image shows Lisa looking much bigger in a patterned dress.

In the second – on the right – she is beaming, showing off her thinner face.

She captioned the image: “Some days it REALLY dawns on me how TRULY far I have come…and every day now…training hard….eating correctly….loving my life….head and heart in sync…..enjoying the person I was ALLOWED to become #smallerme #gettingsmaller #gymgirl @andrewmayers_pt” [sic]

Lisa revealed her weight loss secrets, including quitting alcohol. http://www.express.co.uk/life-style/life/744860/Lisa-Riley-weight-loss

She eats less carbs and doesn’t eat after 6.30 pm.

The TV star also uses Zumba classes to help her stay trim.

Since her weight loss Lisa is planning surgery to remove her excess skin.

She told Closer: “The weight loss has meant I have a lot of sagging skin – at the moment I can fold my stomach into my stockings and my least favourite body part is the roll under my bra strap. No amount of rowing is going to get rid of that.”

Another TV star Holly Willoughby spoke out about her weight loss recently – or her refusal to discuss it publicly.

The 36-year-old mum-of-three and This Morning presenter is admired for her fabulous figure.

However, the successful career woman refuses to be drawn on issues about her weight – because she wants women to decide for themselves what makes them happy.

Farewell, ROSA! Space Station Lets Go of Roll-Out Solar Array After Retraction Fail (Video) [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

After a week of tests on the end of the International Space Station’s robotic arm, the Roll-Out Solar Array (ROSA) was safely jettisoned. While the rollable solar panel unfurled successfully at the beginning of the experiment, the ground operations team was unable to retract it to stow.

ROSA is a flexible, lightweight unit that could someday help power solar-electric propulsion spacecraft for journeys far beyond Earth. It was released yesterday (June 26) according to a procedure developed before the instrument flew, in case of this contingency, NASA officials said in a blog post.

“Once jettisoned, ROSA will not present any risk to the International Space Station and will not impact any upcoming visiting vehicle traffic,” they added.

If it had been retracted successfully, ROSA would have been stowed in the trunk of SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, which departs the space station in a week. But it still wouldn’t have made it back to Earth: Dragon’s trunk will detach and burn up in Earth’s atmosphere as the cargo spacecraft returns.

During the week-long experiment, crews on the ground monitored how well ROSA deployed, observing via video from the space station, as well as measuring its performance over the course of the week as the assembly moved through sunlight and shadow. Its re-rolling marked the end of the instrument’s in-space test, according to NASA.

The space station crew is busy packing Dragon for its departure Sunday (July 2); the departing spacecraft will bring cargo and experiments back from the station to splash down in the Pacific Ocean about 5.5 hours after its 11:38 a.m. EDT (1538 GMT) release from the station.

Star Trek: Discovery’s Two Ships Explained [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

Star Trek: Discovery tells a story of two Federation ships — the U.S.S. Shenzou, and the titular U.S.S. Discovery. Now, showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J. Berg have revealed how the ships relate to each other — and to the larger plot.

The connection between the ships all comes down to main character Sonequa Martin-Green’s First Officer Michael Burnham, according to Harberts.

“Burnham [has] spent a lot of time on Vulcan, but she’s human,” Harberts told Entertainment Weekly. “Sarek [Spock’s father, played by James Frain] plays an important role in her life, which has been completely planned until she makes a very difficult choice that sends her life on a very different path. When we meet her, she’s the First Officer on the Starship Shenzhou [captained by Philippa Georgiou, played by Michelle Yeoh]. And Burnham’s choice that we’re alluding to is most difficult choice you can make — it affects her, affects Starfleet, affects the Federation, it affects the entire universe. That choice leads her to a different ship, the Discovery [helmed by Captain Lorca, played by Jason Isaacs] and there we begin what Gretchen and I call our ‘second pilot.'”

Star Trek: Discovery premieres September 24 on CBS before moving to the CBS All Access app for the remainder of the season.

But one woman can reveal how Holly accomplished her svelte figure.

After giving birth to her daughter Belle in 2011, Holly  worked on strengthening her core and sculpting a six pack in weekly Pilates sessions at home.

Director of London-based Body Control Pilates, Lynne Robinson, helped the presenter on her journey.

She told The Sun:“I worked with Holly for several months, teaching her privately at the home once a week.

“Holly had postnatal matt work classes which concentrated on strengthening and toning her core.

“The exercises help trim the waist and flatten the stomach.”

Exercises Lynne suggests include curl ups with the help of a pillow and large towel, a movement which focuses on alignment, lengthening the spine and connecting the deep abdominal muscles.

She also encourages her celebrity clients to complete arm raise movements holding a towel high in the air.

Speaking to Prima Magazine, Holly revealed why she’s so secretive about any weight loss.

She said: “I don’t want to encourage eating disorders. I try not to focus too much on my appearance. As long as I’m being healthy, that’s good enough for me.

“I’m quite active and I try not to let the ay I look be the main focus because it’s not the important thing.

“I actually avoid talking about my diet and exercise regime because I have interviewed so many people affected by eating disorders.

“I know that some people in chat rooms can really fixate on other people’s diets.”

Another star who’s turned heads with his weight loss is War Dogs actor Jonah Hill.
