Pasta, rice, cereals and bread are among the first foods to be banished by those looking for a speedy slim down.
And not without good reason.
Studies have found extreme low-carbohydrate diets like Atkins can lead to more weight loss than other low-fat regimes.
But new research has revealed eliminating such foods from your diet can have reverse effects in the long run.
The study, conducted by the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, examined federal data on dieters collected between January 2005 and April 2016.
Figures confirmed carb-cutting was the most effective diet for immediate weight loss.
But the report warned the dietary regime is only healthy for six months before it impacts a body’s metabolism.
Researchers found people following a low carb diet lost up to nine pounds more than those on a low fat diet.
But after six months, the effects were hardly distinguishable from other diets.
Dr Heather Fields, internal medicine physician at Mayo Clinic who led the study, said this doesn’t mean it should be avoided all together.
She said: “The best conclusion to draw is that adhering to a short-term low carb diet appears to be safe and may be associated with weight reduction.
“However, that weight loss is small and of questionable clinical significance in comparison to low-fat diets.”
Dr Fields continued: “We encourage patients to eat real food and avoid highly processed foods, especially processed meats, such as bacon, sausage, deli meats, hot dogs, and ham when following any particular diet.”
Researchers found diets that restrict carbohydrate consumption tend to encourage more meats.
External studies have linked a meat-based diet to greater risk of cancer and mortality.
The NHS advises anyone wishing to embark on a new weight loss regime to first consult their GP or medical professional.
