The duo shot to fame in 2009, coming third on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent.
Part of the popularity was down to the fact that they were on the chubby side – but Demi Demetriou discovered his stomach fat was putting him at risk of a heart attack.
The 49-year-old dad and former restaurant owner was forced to face up to his health issues on Sugar Free Farm.
The programme follows a group of celebrities forced to live without sugar and other unhealthy food for two weeks.
But when the show’s doctor assessed Demi’s large stomach, he was so concerned he immediately organised an MRI scan to assess his intra-abdominal fat.
The results showed his hard belly fat was putting him at risk of suffering a heart attack.
Demi was so shocked by the news, he broke down in front of his son.
He said: “I’ve no fat in my arms or legs so I thought carrying weight just around my middle wouldn’t be a big concern, but I was wrong.
“I used to make jokes and say I was pregnant, making light of it.
“But the doctor said it was the worst place to carry fat because it could lead to all sorts of health problems, like heart disease, strokes, diabetes and high blood pressure. I was putting my life at risk but eating less would cut my chances.
“The MRI results were a big shock as I’d never had any health issues in the past, so it was a real wake-up call.”
Describing how he piled on the pounds, he said: “Growing up, I always ate healthily, but it gradually got out of control over the years.
“I used to think it was ok to reward myself with chocolate for working hard – but sitting in the car for four hours travelling to our next gig wasn’t hard work.
“I got myself into a rut, thinking it was easier eating rubbish than eating healthily. I got through four chocolate bars a day and I would never eat a meal without a dessert like apple pie or crumble. I ate Chinese or Thai food at least twice a week.
“I’d have toast and jam or a doughnut for breakfast, a takeaway for lunch, then pasta with cheese for tea, followed by chocolate bars and more doughnuts and crisps. I wanted to do this show as I thought it would be good to see if I could stop all the sugar. But when I got on the scales and saw I was nearly 17 stone, it scared the living daylights out of me.
“We were asked to write down what we ate during a typical week and they calculated how many calories we were consuming a year. It was atrocious.
“That’s when I knew I had to change my mindset and get myself back to eating wholesome food like my grandma used to make me. It was an easy decision – lose the weight or risk not being around to see my kids and grandkids.”
As well as a restricted diet, Sugar Free Farm had the celebs doing manual labour such as slopping out pigs.
But despite shooting to fame as part of a dance act, Demi claimed he was very unfit.
He said: “When I was 17 stone, after three minutes on stage I’d be sweating. I got really out of breath and if I bent down on one knee I had to pull myself back up holding on to something. And I had to breathe in while putting on my socks. I couldn’t see my feet for my belly.”
Both Demi and his son Lagi have transformed their bodies – Demi now weighs 13 stone (down from 17) and Lagi dropped from 13 stone to 11 stone.
