Summer has crept up at seemingly lightening speed, bringing with it a wave of beach body panic.

Fad diets become most tempting at this time of year, as many resort to extreme regimes in a bid to shed unwanted pounds.

But there is an often-overlooked key to slimming down, which requires no extreme dieting whatsoever.

In fact, quite the opposite. You can find it in fruits and cereals, a bowl of brown rice and even bread.

Anti Ageing Food and Fitness Nutritionist Rick Hay believes fibre is the ‘magic ingredient’ when it comes to weight loss that’s sustainable.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, he said: “Firstly, fibre helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer which will help to control excessive snacking. It also has a role to play in helping to reduce portion size at main meals.

“For example, if you have an apple and six or seven almonds mid-morning you will be less inclined to have a larger portion at lunch time.”

A recent paper published in The Journals of Gerontology found consuming the right amount of fibre can also help avoid disease and disability in old age.

Fibre is known to keep us ‘regular’ when it comes to digestion.

Rick explained: “Fibre also helps to keep you regular and therefore helps the digestive tract function optimally. Good digestive function is integral to successful weight reduction.

“Fibre also helps to regulate blood sugar levels which helps to reduce cravings and improve mood – it also helps to balance out or lower the GL of a meal.

“Low GL or GI meals and snacks are key to long-term weight control and in my opinion are more important than simple calorie counting.

According to the NHS, government guidelines dictate we should consume 30g of dietary fibre a day. Yet, most of us consume only about 18g.

There are many ways to boost amount of fibre in your diet.

Rick said: “Fruit and vegetable smoothies for example spinach, pear, apple and nuts or seeds are a great way to increase fibre intake – they are a great breakfast choice.

“Try always to have some vegetable in the smoothie as this helps to lower the GL.

“Other options for increased fibre intake are whole grains like brown rice and wholegrain pasta, pulses like chick peas, beans and lentils.

“To snack on, small portions of nuts and seeds mid morning and afternoon.”

“Think about going vegetarian or vegan every other day as this will really help increase fibre levels and assist with weight loss long term.”
