For the latest research shows that the flexitarian trend is driving growth of meat-free meals with sales up £17.2 million over the past year.

Data from analysts Kantar Worldpanel says that meat-free continues to benefit from UK consumers leaning towards healthier options.

The take-home market was worth a total of £284 million in 2016 and the growth has been boosted by 114,000 more shoppers moving into the category.

Trade magazine The Grocer reported yesterday that burgers, ready meals, sausages and snacks such as scotch eggs contributed the bulk of the success as Brits cut their intake of meat.

Concerns about health and the environment were the main drivers, according to Matt Lee, a director at shopper media agency Capture.

He told The Grocer: “Although the number of vegetarians and vegans is well known to be growing year on year, the main driver for growth in meat-free is a greater proportion of people choosing to cut back on meat.”

Mr Lee said that the most significant aspect about the growth was the age group from which it was coming.

“Some 12 per cent of people now follow vegetarian or vegan diets — rising to 20 per cent of those aged between 16 and 24. “

The report shows that brands are reaping the benefits as supermarkets offer more shelf space to meat-free, particularly in the chilled aisles. Kantar says Quorn is the market leader taking over 60per cent of all spend and setting the pace of the category.

Julian Cooke, head of UK category management for Quorn, told The Grocer: “Chilled is growing ahead of frozen by quite a way. We have done a lot of work over the past year with retailers to grow category space for chilled.

“A survey by the Vegetarian Society in 2016 found that three in ten Britons cut meat consumption last year. A further one in ten were considering doing so.
