Pictures from 2003 show Roy, best known for the BBC Radio 2 series The News Huddlines, sporting a much bigger frame and fuller face.

But 11 years later, in 2014, the 81-year-old was snapped already looking much slimmer.

Fast forward to this year and Roy is half the man he used to be.

So how did the TV personality manage to lose so much weight?

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Roy’s agent confirms he had a gastric band fitted a couple of years ago.

At the start of the process Roy tipped the scales at 20 stone.

But having lost seven stone following the surgery, he now weighs just over 13 stone.

His agent added: “There was no diet involved, although he was obviously eating smaller portions.”

He recently starred in TV drama Broadchurch, but said stress and overwork was why he suddenly quit a major 12-week UK stage tour of Waiting For God, just a week before it began its run on April 20.

Explaining in his column in Yours Magazine, Roy said: “I was so looking forward to going on tour. I am heartbroken about having to leave but it was on advice from our doctor.

“I was suffering from what so many of us do these days, pressure. The pace of life is so great that we sometimes can’r keep up with it.

“I was running all over doing all sorts of jobs so I could afford to go on tour. I started rehearsals for the play and was cream crackers by lunchtime of the first day.”

Let’s block ads! (Why?)
