Weight loss can be helped by clocking lots of hours in bed, not just on the treadmill,  scientists have claimed.

New research found that those who go to bed later and sleep less are more likely to be overweight.

What’s more, the study showed that obesity was much more likely in those who go to bed later, even if they are getting ‘enough’ sleep.

Researchers at the University of Birmingham look at the lifestyles of Chinese children to draw the conclusions.

The study found that there is a link between sleep duration and the amount of body fat.

The children who slept longer had a lower BMI then those who slept longer.

For each hour later that the child went to bed their BMI was a little higher.

Professor Peymané Adab, Professor of Chronic Disease Epidemiology & Public Health, said: “This study contributes to existing evidence for sleep duration as a risk factor for obesity in childhood, and later bedtime as an additional risk factor — regardless of sleep duration.”

Another study has shown the link between sleep and weight loss, and backed up evidence that less sleep could be tied to obesity.

The study found that those who reported getting less than six hours sleep were less likely to successfully lose weight than the or slept between six and eight hours.

The findings were made by the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Portland, US.

A nutritionist at the Swedish health app Lifesum has revealed that chewing food can have a very positive effect on your waistline.

She made the comments after it was revealed Samantha Cameron chews her food fifty times before swallowing as a way to stay slim.

For many, this may seem a little extreme –  but Frida confirmed to Express.co.uk those trying to lose weight should consider it.

She said: “While everything should be done in moderation and it is important to avoid over chewing your food, there are reasons why you should ensure you break down your food as much as possible before swallowing it.”

Saliva helps to neutralise your enamel and prevent tooth decay, meaning that the more you chew, the healthier your teeth will be.
