The keto diet plan is a failsafe method to lose weight for many slimmers, who swear by the famous eating plan.

The main principles of the keto diet include eating a low carbohydrate, medium protein and high fat diet. 

This way of eating helps put the body into a state called ketosis, whereby it burns fat instead of glucose. 

Adding coconut oil, a popular healthy eating staple, to your diet can help accelerate this process.

In turn, this helps you lose weight quicker, according to My Keto Diet, a website for ketogenic dieters.

The website explains that coconut oil contain a type of fats called medium chain triglycerides (MCTS for short).

“MCTs are easily digested and are a great instant source of energy as they don’t need to be broken down before they’re used, unlike most other fats,” the website says.

“MCTs are converted in the liver to ketones that are responsible for putting people in a state called ketosis which is the purpose of a low carbohydrate high fat ketogenic diet.”

Coconut oil also allows you to stave off hunger, meaning you are less likely to reach for snacks outside of meal times.

The website explains: “Coconut oil contains more than 50 per cent of the MCT called lauric acid.”

“Lauric acid has been shown to lower the hormone Ghrelin through elevated ketone production.

“Ghrelin is the hormone responsible for regulating hunger. The more ghrelin you produce the hungrier you’ll be, the less ghrelin you produce the more satisfied you’ll be.”

Of course, consuming coconut oil isn’t the only keto diet trick. For those dedicated to following the plan, there is one food in particular that will help you to stay full.

Eating eggs will help you stave off hunger on a keto diet, nutritionist Jenna Hope explained.

She said: “Eggs are high in protein and healthy fats which take longer to break down and digest therefore keeping you fuller for longer.

“Research suggests that protein helps to regulate hunger levels and food intake by increasing the thermic effect of feeding (the amount of energy required to breakdown and utilise food).

“Therefore eggs have been shown to stabilise and control hunger levels. 

Bored of eggs? Jenna also recommended some other foods to keep you full on a keto diet.

Greek yoghurt sprinkled with cinnamon is one. Cinnamon helps to control blood sugar which can help to eliminate some of the cravings you may experience on a keto diet. 

Jenna also recommends avocado, which is a source of good fats and also high in fibre.
