An Indian spice used for cooking and flavouring curries, turmeric can easily be found in most shops and supermarkets across the UK.

Used for centuries in traditional medicines due to its health benefits, turmeric is also an effective method to help speed up weight loss and keep belly fat at bay.

With a warming, slightly bitter flavour and smell akin to mustard, turmeric is endorsed by many celebrities the world over, praising the simple spice for its weight loss properties.

Earlier this year, Take That’s Gary Barlow revealed he used the spice to slim down and maintain his muscular figure.

The 46-year-old revealed he consumes turmeric with milk, cinnamon, a pinch of black pepper, ginger, cayenne pepper and honey.

How does it work?

Turmeric aids weight loss by “blocking fat cells from forming and expanding,” according to a 2009 scientific study.

Accumulation of fat in the adipose tissues in the stomach and liver is characteristic of obesity and excessive weight, and turmeric can prevent fat accumulating in these tissues.

The yellow root spice, often in the form of a powder, also converts white fat into brown fat – the type of fat that is burned by the body to release energy.

Along with blocking fat cells and converting fat, turmeric also stimulates cells to make new mitochondria, which act as a stomach for each cell to break down nutrients, meaning more fat can be broken down.

Turmeric can also accelerate diet-induced weight loss, as the carbohydrate fraction of turmeric is not absorbed in the body which is helpful in fat reduction

Speeding up your metabolism, enhancing the effects of your diet and suppressing fat production will all contribute to weight loss, helping you achieve your goals.

How to use it?

Turmeric is a versatile spice that can be used in cooking, sprinkled on foods or drunk in cold or hot drinks.

Turmeric root can be a great addition to your diet, with 1-3g or 1/2 inch long piece of root slice or chopped being all you need to add to your meal, or fresh juice.

By crushing the roots with a pestle and mortar, you can make a paste from the fresh root, that can be added to curries and other foods.

When it comes to its powder form, 1tsp daily of turmeric can be added to smoothies, for as Gary Barlow has revealed, in warm “golden milk”.

Turmeric can also be used to make tea, with both turmeric milk and tea having a recommended daily dosage of one to two cups a day.

Other benefits

Along with aiding weight loss, turmeric is also packed with antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties.

It is also reported to help prevent alzheimer’s disease, fight against depression and even prevent cancer.

Another traditional Indian spice also known for its weight-loss capabilities is cumin seeds.

Small but mighty, when soaked with water cumin seeds become a magic potion for weight loss, helping to reduce overall bodymass and that hard-to-shift abdominal fat.
