Gabourey Sidibe weight loss: How the Precious and Empire actress got her incredible figure [bestandroiddoubledinheadunit950.blogspot.com]

Gabourey Sidibe, 35, is an American actress and writer who has achieved an incredible weight loss.

The plus size star has transformed her body following a bariatric surgery in 2016.

She is most famous for playing the lead in 2009 Precious, and has starred more recently in American Horror Story and musical drama series Empire.

Her laproscopic bariatric surgery reduced the size of her stomach, resulting in a huge reduction in her size.

While Gabourey has not revealed the exact amount of weight she has lost, before and after pictures show it is substantial.

Speaking about her decision in her 2017 book, This Is Just My Face: Try Not To Stare, Gabourey said her weight loss was motivated by health rather than her looks.

She wrote: “It has taken me years to realise that what I was born with is all beautiful.

“I did not get this surgery to be beautiful. I did it so I can walk around comfortably in heels. I want to do a cartwheel. 

“I want not to be in pain every time I walk up a flight of stairs.”

So how did Gabourey lose the weight? While her bariatric surgery spurred on her weight loss, Gabourey also developed healthier habits to encourage her weight loss, according to People magazine.

She changed her eating habits through working with a nutritionist.

Gabourey also began working out with a personal trainer, swimming and riding on a tricycle around the set of Empire, the publication reported.

Gabourey’s Instagram account gave an insight into how her eating habits changed.

She revealed on her account @gabby3shabby, which has 1.5 million followers, that she had started “meatless Mondays”.

She wrote: “Y’all didn’t ask or anything but I try to go meatless on Monday’s and I’m trying to cook more so I made a recipe from my friend @shira_rdnew book!

“This is a spicy cabbage mix stir fry (accept not spicy cuz I’m sensitive) with some Beyond Meat chicken strips.

“It’s delicious and I’m hella proud of myself because I’m super duper lazy.”

Another example of a celebrity losing a substantial amount of weight is Kelly Osbourne’s weight loss.

Kelly Osbourne, 33, is the daughter of star couple Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne.

While her career went from strength-to-strength, Kelly’s weight was often fluctuating, revealing she was an “emotional eater”. However, the star has lost almost four stone in recent years, now following a vegan diet plan.

Weight loss starts with what you eat for breakfast, and if you chose to tuck into a tasty bagel in the morning – but also struggle to keep off the pounds – you might benefit from swapping to eggs.

Toast, cereal and even a Full English fry up are popular choices for breakfast across the nation.

While a Full English breakfast and a bacon sandwich were the first and second place results of a 2014 Co-op survey, tea and toast came in third place.

One slice of toast is roughly 75 calories, which isn’t an awful lot when you think about it. But, nutritionally speaking there’s not much protein to keep your body going through the day in a slice of toast.

Bagels – traditionally from New York but very popular in modern day Britain – weigh in at 245 calories. Again, there’s only 10g of protein in a bagel.

All this talk of protein could baffle some, but hardened dieters and those interested in nutrition will know protein helps you stay full for longer.

Eating foods that deliver some fat, fibre, and some protein are ideal for those wishing to take part in a healthy, balanced diet – be it for weight loss or just health purposes.

In the UK, adults are advised to eat 0.75g of protein for each kilogram they weigh. That means, on average, men should eat 55g and women 45g of protein daily.

In December 2005 a team of scientists conducted a study into the short-term effect of eggs on satiety in overweight and obese subjects.

Specifically, they looked at how eating an egg for breakfast rather than a bagel would effect satiety – in layman’s terms, how long the test subjects stayed feeling full for after each breakfast.

Thirty women with BMIs of at least 25 kg/M2 between the ages of 25 to 60 were recruited to participate in a randomised study.

And the results were very interesting.

The egg-breakfast enjoyed by the women induced “greater satiety” and significantly reduced short-term food intake, the scientists reported.

Another study in 30 men compared the effects of three types of breakfasts on three separate occasions: eggs on toast, cereal with milk and toast, and croissant with orange juice.

The results of this study, undertaken in 2013, backed up the results from the 2005 study on women.

Scientists at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Surrey, reported eating eggs for breakfast caused the men to automatically eat up to 470 calories less at lunch and dinner buffets, when compared to eating the other breakfasts.

They stated: “The breakfast meal with the greatest effect on satiety and subsequent intake of energy was distinct in having the highest protein and lowest carbohydrate content relative to the other two breakfasts.”

Therefore swapping the carbs in favour of protein in the morning – or even adding an egg to your morning round of toast – could be beneficial to anyone wishing to lose weight.

The total lunar eclipse tomorrow (July 27) won’t be visible for people across North America, and bad weather could threaten even the geographically lucky — but in the digital age, no avid skywatcher is ever shut out.

Astronomy lovers from across the eclipse zone will be livestreaming their views, so if you are not able to catch the event live, you'll have plenty of options, and we'll pick one to share at Space.com.

Slooh will turn its online telescope to the lunar eclipse for a massive 6-hour moon-fest, with coverage starting at 1 p.m. EDT (1700 GMT) and ending at 7:30 p.m. EDT (2300 GMT). The webcast will include a team of experts discussing the science and stories behind lunar eclipses in general and this long one specifically. [Here's How Friday's Superlong Lunar Eclipse Works]

The Virtual Telescope Project will also be broadcasting its view of the eclipse — and Mars in opposition — from the Palatine Hill of Rome. This livestream will appeal to history lovers, with the ancient Arch of Constantine and the Colosseum dominating the skyline. The broadcast will start at 2:30 p.m. EDT (1830 GMT).

If you prefer England to Italy, the Royal Museums Greenwich, site of the Royal Observatory, will be just your cup of tea. The observatory will be broadcasting the view from the Annie Maunder Astrographic Telescope on Facebook, beginning at 3:45 p.m. EDT (1945 GMT). The Bareket Observatory in Israel will livestream the view from its telescope, with the broadcast beginning at 2:30 p.m. EDT (1830 GMT). Time and Date will also be streaming the eclipse beginning at 2 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT) from an unspecified location.

For an eclipse livestream in Spanish, tune in to Sky Live TV, which will be broadcasting from Namibia with astronomers from the Canary Islands. The livestream will begin at 2:20 p.m. EDT (1820 GMT).

Don't want to hop between livestreams for the best view? The Weather Channel will be pulling footage from a range of sites to share on its app for U.S. viewers. The broadcast will start at 4 p.m. EDT (2000 GMT) and last about an hour.

Whichever broadcast you choose, happy lunar eclipse viewing!

Who discovered Mars? That’s a trick question: Because the planet is visible to the naked eye, humans have been watching our rusty neighbor for thousands of years, and there’s no way to track down the name of the long-dead observer who first noticed its reddish glow.

But just because we'll never be able to give that sharp-eyed human a name doesn't mean there's nothing interesting to learn about the history of observing Mars.

Mars, like the other planets visible without a telescope, has caught people's eyes for its unusual movement against the background constellations. Cultures from the Maya to the Chinese, and from the Aboriginal Australians to the Greeks, left observations of its wandering path across the sky. That said, they didn't know what Mars was — it was just a bright light that didn't behave in quite the same way as the other bright lights did. "These [planets] of course never were regarded, as they are now, as their own separate worlds," Anthony Aveni, who studies ancient astronomy in Central and South America and who retired last year as a professor at Colgate University, told Space.com.

Early observers of Mars also prioritized different types of observations of the planet than we do today. Modern astronomers focus on the sidereal year, the time it takes Mars to orbit the sun — about 687 days. But for centuries, Aveni said, that wasn't the number sky-minded people associated with Mars. "They recognize periodicities and movements that we don't pay any attention to," he said.

For Mars, that meant people prioritized 780 days, the average length of the cycle that Mars shows in the sky. The planet appears and disappears in the night sky, sometimes slipping into the sunlit sky and becoming invisible. If you watched from appearance to appearance, or from disappearance to disappearance, a cycle would last about 780 days, the synodic period of the planet. "It's about how Mars relates to you personally, how it relates to our culture," Aveni said. "It's not about how long it rotates, whether it has life."

Aveni primarily studies the Maya, and he said that most of what we know about how they watched Mars comes from just one book, called the Dresden Codex. The text includes a table of observations that scholars know must be of Mars because of the 780-day cycle.

The book also includes a drawing of what scholars refer to as the "Mars Beast," which Aveni described as a macaw-like creature with a nose like an elephant's trunk. He added that the planet's orbit, which carries Mars across the whole sky, shaped the traits associated with it. "He's more of a watchdog or a guardian of the entire landscape," Aveni said.

Other cultures looking to the sky, Aveni said, were more interested in how the different planets interacted than in any individual planet's journeys. For example, he points to Chinese astronomers, who were fascinated by planetary conjunctions.

One Aboriginal Australian communitysaw Mars as one of four wives following the moon; another saw Mars and Venus as the two eyes of a celestial being. Although few traditions about Mars  survive, astronomers focusing on Australia have evidence that Aboriginal peoples across the region tracked it and the other planets carefully for millennia.

And, of course, the Greeks and Romans traced the movements of Mars and other celestial bodies across the sky. They associated the Red Planet with their god of war (Mars to the Romans; Ares to the Greeks), giving us the Mars we know today.

With many Britons still looking to lose weight fast this summer, a few exercises exist that will burn calories quickly, with none involving slogging away on a treadmill.

A recent study by researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota looked at 39 common exercises and ranked them on information obtained from the US National Institutes of Health.

The research calculated the number of calories burned during an hour of each exercise.

One exercise that burns a an impressive amount of calories, speeding up weight-loss result, is Taekwondo.

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art, characterised by its emphasis on head-height kicks, jumping and spinning kicks.

With so much moving around, the workout burns a staggering 752-937 calories per hour.

Doing just over three hours of Taekwondo could burn a whole pound of fat, with a pound of fat being equal to 3,500 calories.

Another surprising exercise that burns a whopping amount of calories is vigorous swimming.

Vigorous swimming burns an amazing 715-892 calories per hour, and is also good for Briton’s with injuries or joint pain.

Along with being cooling and more enjoyable than other forms of exercise, swimming is a workout for the whole body, toning each muscle individually.

Join a gym with a swimming pool or head to a local leisure centre to burn hundreds of calories and lose weight fast.

The third best exercise for losing weight fast is rollerblading.

The surprisingly weight-loss friendly workout actually burns an impressive 548-683 calories an hour.

Perfect for summer, rollerblading can be done in groups and outdoors, taking the pressure and dread that often comes with working out.

The fun exercise is great for toning the leg muscles and glutes.

Calories will continue to be burnt for hours even after the workout has finished, due to the body refuelling and repairing its biggest muscles.

Another exercise that is set to help Britons lose weight fast is weight lifting, which also burns calories even hours after the workout has finished.

Weight loss can be challenging for many Britons, with obesity in the UK on the rise.

Along with affecting body confidence, being overweight can lead to severe health problems, with mentally and physically.

One Briton who decided enough is enough is Zoe Greenslade, who recently dropped from a whopping 22stone to a healthy, slender 11 stone 10 pounds.

The 40-year-old lost 10 stone by following a simple diet plan, no fads, no diet pills and no outlandish exercise methods.

Overhauling her way of eating, Zoe also addressed her problems with emotional eating, a problem which saw her pile on the pounds.

Revealing the motivation to start her journey Zoe said: “At the beginning of 2017 I felt really unwell. It was getting ridiculous, I couldn’t even get up the stairs without getting out of breath.

“Not only did I not feel healthy, but I also hated how I looked. I’d stopped socialising and being my fun-loving self.

“I was very conscious that my 40th birthday was fast approaching and if I didn’t do something now I was at risk of serious health problems.”

Before losing weight Zoe associated the feeling of having a full stomach with satisfaction. and letting emotions rule her eating, but that all changed when she started a strict meal plan.

Zoe signed up for the LighterLife Total Plan, which saw her lose a staggering stone a month.

The meal plan incorporated whole healthy foods, which are easy to replicate at home.

When she weighed in at over 22 stone, Zoe would eat breakfast of toast with thick butter and jam, but now eats porridge with raspberries.

For lunch, Zoe now has egg salad with yoghurt, a vast improvement on her previous sandwich, crisps and cake meal.

For dinner, Zoe previously gorged on spaghetti bolognese with garlic bread, but now eats slimming chicken breast, vegetables and sweet potato.

Seeing her shed the pounds fast, she initially ate 600-800 calories of these whole foods three days a week, before increasing her about to 800-1200 on seeing results.

Talking about her slimming method, Zoe said: “I now have practical tips on how I can cope with my emotions without heading straight for the biscuit tin.

“Each day I’d have four tasty products to replace my usual diet of high sugar snacks and big family feasts.”

Her impressive 10 stone weight-loss even saw her sit next to her daughter on a rollercoaster for the first time, and ride a bike to work.

Another Briton who lost an impressive amount of weight is coffee shop worker Vanessa Strike, who went from a size 20 to a size 8.

Vanessa accredits her weight-loss to her new-found workout in the gym, which burns fat for hours even after the session has ended.

WASHINGTON — NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said July 25 that, in order to address the delays and cost overruns with the James Webb Space Telescope, the agency may seek to slow down development of another flagship astrophysics mission.

Testifying before the House Science Committee in the first half of a two-part hearing on JWST, Bridenstine suggested that slowing down work on the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) until after JWST is launched could be a way to deal with JWST's increased cost while maintaining a "balanced portfolio" of large and small astrophysics programs.

"The idea of WFIRST presumed that JWST would be on orbit and delivering science," he said. "So it is my recommendation that we move forward with WFIRST after we move forward with JWST." [Building the James Webb Space Telescope: Hubble's Successor (Gallery)]

"It is true we can do some development now. I'm not saying that we need to shut down WFIRST, and we shouldn't do it," he added. "What I'm saying is there's opportunity here."

Current plans for WFIRST call for a launch in 2025, assuming full funding. That funding is uncertain at the moment, though, since the administration proposed cancelling WFIRST in its 2019 budget request. House and Senate versions of appropriations bills would keep the mission going, but the House bill offers $150 million versus $352 million in the Senate bill. The latter amount, NASA says, is what's needed to keep the mission on schedule.

NASA spokesperson Felicia Chou said after the hearing that if WFIRST's budget were to be cut to pay JWST's cost overruns, that would have the effect of slowing the project down. Those cuts would take place in fiscal years 2020 and 2021, the years NASA has identified it needs approximately $490 million to cover additional JWST costs.

"It is within the range of possibilities that the reduction to WFIRST would be roughly one third of its budget in each of those years, and so the net delay to launch might be up to a few years," she said.

Bridenstine said during the hearing that no decisions had been made on how to cover those additional JWST costs. "By the 2020 timeframe is when we're going to need to have additional funds. So between now and then we're going to have to make determinations," he said. "Right now that process is underway."

He said those decisions would consider the guidance from decadal surveys and a desire to maintain a balanced portfolio of programs. He specifically assured one member, Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.), that the extra funding would not come out of human spaceflight programs, particularly the Space Launch System. "This is relevant to the Science Mission Directorate exclusively, and that's where, at this point, we've had discussions about what are the options going forward," Bridenstine said.

Committee members used the two-and-a-half-hour hearing to express their frustrations with this latest delay, noting that the original concept for the mission called for it to cost $500 million and launch in 2007, versus a current lifecycle cost of $9.6 billion and launch in 2021. "This is 19 times the original cost and a delay of 14 years," said Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), chairman of the committee. "It doesn't get much worse than that."

They directed some of that frustration at prime contractor Northrop Grumman for human errors that contributed to the latest delays. "Contractors will have to deliver on time and on budget. If they cannot, they should be penalized," Smith said.

Bridenstine said they have some options for what Smith called "contractor accountability" for JWST. Northrop is not currently receiving an award fee on its cost-plus contract because of these delays, he said, and won't be eligible for about half of the award fee it could earn once JWST is successfully launched and commissioned.

"Those potential award fees would add up to, if they were to maximize it, about $60 million. We have already taken off the table $28 million of that $60 million," he said.

Tom Young, the chairman of the JWST independent review board and the hearing's other witness, offered a different approach to the award fee issue. "If I had this problem, I would take all of the fees that currently exist," he said, "and I'd put them all together in one lump sum, and I would have the criteria for getting them the quantity and quality of data returned by JWST after it's on orbit."

Members will get their opportunity to discuss contractor performance during the second half of the hearing July 26, when Northrop Grumman Chief Executive Wes Bush will testify with Young. The two-part hearing was necessitated by scheduling issues involving Bush and Bridenstine.

Members had little criticism, though, of Bridenstine, a former committee member who has been on the job at NASA for only three months. Some of his former colleagues expressed confidence that he would be able to get JWST back on track.

"Your legacy, I suspect, will be determined by how well you, working with all of the wonderful people at NASA and all the contractors, deliver on finishing James Webb," said Rep. Frank Lucas (R-Okla.)

Despite still eating a proper Full English breakfast every day, publican Adam Joy shed nearly half of his original body weight after packing in an average of seven pints of Stella every day.

Mr Joy embarked on his incredible weight-loss journey in November 2017, when the roly-poly father-of-two struggled to climb his stairs.

The 40-year-old reflected on his unhealthy lifestyle choices and decided to get in touch with his local Slimming World centre.

He swapped pints of beer for ice-filled glasses of gin and ditched fast food in favour of lean, protein packed breakfasts.

In eight months, the pub landlord had cut his weight down by a whopping 13 stone – leaving him full of energy and inspiration.

Mr Joy, from Dartford, Kent, said: “I couldn’t get up the stairs, there was even a time at Twickenham where I couldn’t get up to the next floor to watch the game.

“Now I still enjoy myself, I drink gin and slimline and still eat a cooked breakfast with bubble and squeak – just with leaner sausages.

“The message I want to get across to people is that fad diets did not change my weight, it’s about long term strategies.”

A combination of high-protein, low fat meals and long walks with his dog slashed Mr Joy’s waistline by six inches and alleviated his high blood pressure.

His day now starts with a grilled Full English, which sees him fast for the afternoon before his last order of a high protein milkshake and fruit.

The new lifestyle has rubbed off on the family, with Mr Joy acting as head chef for wife Carol-Ann, 46, and kids Caitlin, 19, and Jack, 13.

His success at his weight loss group saw him win the Slimming World Man of the Year competition and become a fat-loss mentor in Bexley, south east London.

As a part-time weight loss consultant, Mr Joy has taken on 20 overweight clients – with one couple losing 17 pounds in just a week.

He also runs healthy curry nights at his pub – the Bird in Hand in Dartford – which now stocks a ‘healthy’ 14 different gin options.

Although he is happier with his new weight and healthy way of life, Mr Joy still misses “his cheese and sausage rolls in the morning”.

He now wants to encourage more men to follow the path he did and join slimming clubs, which has helped to keep him on track.

Despite reaching his “ideal weight” of 14 stone, the pub landlord is now gunning for a six pack – hoping to achieve one within six months.

The sun is not silent; in fact, it has a surprisingly soothing sound. 

Have you ever listened to the sun? Thanks to data from the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), now you can. Using 20 years of data on the dynamic movement of the sun's atmosphere, researchers have made it possible for us to listen to the sun's eruptions, loops, waves and other activity. 

It turns out that the sun produces a low, pulsing "heartbeat." But these sounds are more than just the hottest tracks from NASA scientists. Listening to the sun gives scientists a different way to observe and study not only Earth's sun, but also other stars in the universe, according to a statement. "Waves are traveling and bouncing around inside the sun, and if your eyes were sensitive enough, they could actually see this," Alex Young, associate director for science in the Heliophysics Science Division at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said in the statement.

Using a solar observatory to measure the sun's vibrations — which can be translated into sound — reveals what's going on inside and can help scientists to study everything from solar flares to coronal mass ejections in the sun, according to the statement. 

"We don't have straightforward ways to look inside the sun. We don't have a microscope to zoom inside the sun, so using a star or the sun's vibrations allows us to see inside of it," Young continued. 

The Stanford Experimental Physics Lab turned data from SOHO into a "song." They worked with the sun's natural vibrations, which make up the hum and "heartbeat" that you may hear in the recording. 

To create the audio clip above, researcher Alexander Kosovichev of Stanford University processed 40 days of data from SOHO's Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI). In processing the vibrations, he removed effects from the spacecraft's movement, selected clean sound waves that would be clearer to hear and sped the data up by a factor of 42,000 to bring it up to the audible range for humans. 

With this strange, soothing, stellar audio, scientists "can see huge rivers of solar material flowing around. We are finally starting to understand the layers of the sun and the complexity. That simple sound is giving us a probe inside of a star. I think that's a pretty cool thing," Young said in the statement.

Weight loss can be extremely challenging, with many people giving up and not achieving their ideal weight.

One Briton that managed to shed the weight is Vanessa Strike, a coffee shop worker from Worcester who gained six stone from snacking on broken bits of pastries and cakes.

She wasn’t aware of the impact her weight gain was having on her health until a close family member went through a health scare, and she realised she has to make some changes.

Vanessa quickly began working out at home, being inspired by bodybuilding social media accounts.

After picking up weights and changing her diet she quickly started to shed the pounds.

With her weight now at 11 and a half stone, Vanessa turned to foods from the likes of Muscle Food.com to help change her diet.

Combined with weight lifting she swapped breakfast cereal and pastries for protein porridge, and calorie and fat-packed lunches and dinners for chicken salads.

Revealing how she lost the weight, Vanessa said: “I’d always been really fit and healthy right up until my early 20s. I’d danced at the same dance school for over 17 years and had never worried about my weight or what I was eating.

“I’d eat broken breakfast pastries and cakes throughout the day at work then would come home and cook three-course dinners every night. We’d always have a starter followed by a huge pasta meal and favourites like toad in the hole and cottage pie.

“I was unhappy with how I looked and felt, I wasn’t enjoying my job and I felt trapped in my marriage.”

Realising things had to change, Vanessa decided to address one thing at a time, starting by doing workouts at home as she was “too embarrassed and ashamed to go to the gym”.

Revealing her new diet, Vanessa said: “I overhauled my diet. I love to cook and love food so didn’t want to cut out all the things I enjoyed.

“Instead I made a few adjustments to make them healthier – swapping regular bread and pasta for the low-carb versions I could buy, like protein pizza.”

With her bad eating habits overhauled Vanessa began working out four times a week, starting to show an interest in bodybuilding.

She continued: “I mentioned to a couple of the PTs at the gym that I’d always wanted to compete at one of the bodybuilding shows and they gave me the encouragement I needed to actually do something about it.”

Working out combined with a high protein diet resulted in Vanessa shedding pounds and losing weight fast.

“What I eat is really important in getting me competition ready and protein has to be a major part of my diet,” she revealed.

Vanessa also keeps carbs and calories down, helping her to maintain her weight.

Someone else who cut down on carbs in an effort to lose weight was comedian Johnny Vegas. 

Taking to Twitter this week he impressed fans by showing off his impressive weight loss and diet secrets, sharing an image of his protein and healthy-fat heavy breakfast.

Kelly Osbourne, 33, is the daughter of Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne.

Following her rise to fame in the MTV reality show The Osbournes, Kelly forged a career in music and television and even branched into fashion.

While her career went from strength-to-strength, Kelly’s weight was often fluctuating, revealing she was an “emotional eater”.

However, the star has lost almost four stone in recent years, now following a vegan diet plan.

Kelly’s weight-loss was kickstarted in 2009, when she spent a short amount of time in Oregon’s Hazelden Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Center for prescription drug addiction.

After she was discharged she said: “I replaced the drugs with food and just got fatter and fatter. I’m an emotional eater. When I get upset, my diet goes out the window.”

Following her health scare, Kelly became more aware of her bad eating habits, knowing something had to change.

In the following years she appeared on Dancing with the Stars, where her dance partner Louis Van Amstel taught her about nutrition.

Following her dancing stint, the star lost 30 pounds, but began to put it back on after the show wrapped.

In an effort to maintain her weight loss, Kelly started hiking a few times a week in the Hollywood Hills, dropping a further 30 pounds.

In 2012 Kelly revealed her continued weight loss was down to her relationship with vegan chef Matthew Mosshart.

Nowadays, the couple isn’t together, but Kelly still maintains her trim figure by following a vegan diet.

The reality TV star often posts snapshots and videos of her plant-based diet, championing her favourite vegan dish – vegan mac n cheese.

Captioning her post, Kelly said: “I really miss eating cheese so today I tried ‘vegan shell pasta and creamy sauce’ aka Mac & cheese… you can not tell the difference.”

Along with sharing her mac n cheese meals, she has also posted images of cucumber on toast, writing: “I used to think being a vegan was boring. Now I have more fun with food now than I ever have before.”

Veganism is a diet plan adopted by many of Hollywood’s hottest, and trimmest, celebrities.

While many follow the diet for ethical reasons, many also follow it due to its health and weight-loss benefits.

Miley Cyrus, Lea Michele, Ariana Grande, Jennifer Lopez and Jared Leto all follow the diet plan, with Beyonce and Jay Z also having dabbled in it.

Another celebrity who has lost a significant amount of weight is Hairy Bikers’ Dave Myers.

Dave went from 19 stone to less than 15 stone in the past 12 months, he told The Mirror in June.

Have you ever noticed that when there’s a solar or lunar eclipse, an eclipse of the other variety comes two weeks before or after? Sometimes, we’ll even get three eclipses in less than a month. 

Just such a situation is happening right now. We already have had a partial eclipse of the sun this month, on Friday the 13th, visible only from parts of Antarctica, Tasmania, Australia and a very narrow slice of New Zealand. Another partial eclipse of the sun will take place on Aug. 11; it will be visible to those living in northern Europe as well as a large portion of central and eastern Asia. Even parts of far northern and eastern Canada will get a brief glimpse of it at sunrise. 

And right in the middle, between the two solar eclipses, there will be a total eclipse of the moon on July 27. [Blood Moon 2018: Longest Total Lunar Eclipse of Century Occurs July 27]

That's because on that day, the moon will cross the ecliptic, the line that marks the sun's path around the sky. If the moon crosses the ecliptic when full, we'll get an eclipse of the moon; if the moon crosses the ecliptic when new, we'll get an eclipse of the sun. Incidentally, this is the reason the sun's path around the sky is called the "ecliptic" — for "eclipse"! 

And whenever a full or new moon crosses the ecliptic on one side of the lunar orbit, it will also cross that line on the opposite side of the lunar orbit, either two weeks earlier or two weeks later. We call this period an "eclipse season." 

We typically get two eclipses during an eclipse season. But as was just noted, during this current eclipse season, not two, but three eclipses will take place within a single synodic month of 29.53 days — the time it takes to go from one new moon to the next. 

The upcoming total eclipse of the moon on July 27 is going to be especially noteworthy, as the satellite will pass just to the north of the middle of Earth's shadow. In fact, the moon will reach the descending node of its orbit — the point where it crosses the ecliptic going from north to south — just 138 minutes after it arrives at full phase, resulting in a nearly central total eclipse. 

Because of this, the two new moons that flank the July 27 full moon will skirt just close enough to the moon's opposite (ascending) node to allow the moon to marginally eclipse the sun both times. Hence, we get three eclipses instead of the usual two.

Another artifact of the moon's near-central passage through the Earth's shadow is that totality will last an unusually long time. Actually, the moon's path through the shadow is just one factor in making for a long-lasting total phase; the moon's distance also has an effect. About 14 hours before it's full, the moon will be at its farthest point from Earth (apogee), a distance of 252,415 miles (406,223 kilometers), and the moon moves slowest in its orbit when it's farthest from the Earth. 

This also results in a full moon that is much smaller than average; in fact, this will be the smallest full moon of 2018. This eclipse will occur three weeks after the Earth has arrived at aphelion, the farthest point in the planet's orbit from the sun, when the Earth's umbral shadow appears largest in angular size. 

So, summing it all up, we will have a small moon, moving more slowly than usual, passing almost straight through the middle of a larger-than-normal shadow of Earth. This will result in an inordinately long eclipse whose total phase will last 1 hour and 43 minutes, just 4 minutes shy of the longest possible totality. According to "The Five Millennium Canon of Lunar Eclipses: (-1999to +3000)" by Fred Espenak and Jean Meeus, this is the longest total lunar eclipse Earth will see until June 9, 2123. 

The average duration of a total lunar eclipse is about 50 minutes.

Now for some bad news, if you live in North or Central America: None of this eclipse will be visible in these locations — not even the partial stages — because the entire event will take place during the midday and afternoon hours, when it will be daytime and the moon will be below the horizon. 

If, however, you happen to be in Europe, Africa or Asia, you'll be able to see the event. The moon will appear directly overhead from a point only a few hundred miles off the east coast of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. 

Much of Japan and eastern Australia will see the moon set while it's in total eclipse. The central and eastern portions of South America will see the moon rise either during or after totality. 

Along with the totally eclipsed moon, something else in the sky will vie for attention: Mars. On the day of the eclipse, Mars will be at opposition to the sun. Shining with a dazzling yellow-orange glow, this planet will be situated about a half-dozen degrees below the moon. Some longtime eclipse enthusiasts might recall a similar pairing of a totally eclipsed moon with Mars at an exceptionally bright opposition on Aug. 6, 1971. That eclipse, like this upcoming one, was visible only from the Old World.

The next total eclipse of the moon will occur Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019. 

As if to try to compensate North Americans who will miss out on this summer's show, the next lunar eclipse will strongly favor the Western Hemisphere. From most of the United States and Canada, the eclipse will be visible from start to finish, with totality occurring during convenient "prime-time" evening hours. In addition, the totally eclipsed moon will appear very high in the winter sky. 

It will also occur during the three-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, ensuring a large viewing audience nationally. This will be the first time that a total lunar eclipse has occurred during a holiday weekend since May 1975. In short, it likely will be a very popular and much-anticipated celestial event.

Dave Myers is one half of the Hairy Bikers duo with Si King, 50. He has achieved an impressive weight loss in the past year.

Dave went from 19 stone to less than 15 stone in the past 12 months, he told The Mirror in June.

This is an incredible weight loss of over four stone from Dave’s 6ft tall frame.

“I am not morbidly obese now. I might feel like a male Adonis if I get to 14st,” he told the publication.

Revealing how he managed to drop the weight so quickly, he said: “I always lose weight by cutting all the carbs out.

He also used the popular weight loss method of counting calories to drop the weight, as well as cutting out alcohol.

“I just calorie count and knock the booze on the head and then watch the scales to see the weight come off.”

“Now I’ve been very healthy,” he added.

Dave also revealed his waist size was previously 49 inches, in an interview with Irish Times earlier this year.

Both Dave and his Hairy Bikers partner Si, whose weight peaked at almost 20 stone, were once dangerously overweight.

“We were starting to get old before our time,” he told the publication.

“I’m 10 years older than Kingy, but we’d both begun to shuffle, the knees were sore.”

The Hairy Bikers’ weight loss of three stone each was documented back in 2012.

Their latest book, The Hairy Dieters Make It Easy, details their new diet-friendly recipes.

Another example of a chef losing weight is Gordon Ramsay’s weight loss.

Gordon Ramsay, 51, achieved a weight loss of more than four stone after tipping the scales at 18st in 2000.

The 6ft 2 British celebrity chef and author of Fit Food now weighs just 13st 10lb.

But how did Gordon lose the weight? He is said to have limited a common food group in order to do it.

Asked how he dropped the stones, he said: “No milk. Just because it’s sluggish.”

“Dropping milk and cheese has made a massive difference,” he said, speaking to the Daily Mail.

"Cosmos: Possible Worlds," the highly anticipated next season of the groundbreaking science TV series, is shaping up to be something special.

The upcoming season, which is set to premiere in the spring of 2019, will continue the show's legacy exploring the marvels of our expanding universe. In a new trailer, released Saturday (July 21), astrophysicist and popular science communicator Neil deGrasse Tyson makes a triumphant return as the show's host.

In the trailer, Tyson drops a few hints about what the new season might entail. "We inhabit the cosmos of undiscovered dimensions and paradoxical realities," Tyson says in the video as he appears to replicate, simultaneously eating a slice of pizza, reading a book and dancing. "We live on one level of perception, but there are others."

In the video, Tyson suggests that the new season might explore the search for extraterrestrial life. "We search the heavens for signs of intelligent life. But what would we do if we found it? Are we ready for first contact?" he says.

The trailer promises that the new season will entail "new voyages to never-before-seen worlds" and the exploration of "new realms of the imagination." And, if this season is anything like the first, viewers are sure to be completely captivated by our universe and the way Tyson makes even complex scientific topics exciting and accessible.

"Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey," the show's previous season, was created as a follow-up to "Cosmos: A Personal Voyage," a 1980 TV series co-created and hosted by legendary astronomer and science communicator Carl Sagan. Sagan's unique legacy of making the universe personal continues on through Tyson in this series.

"The heart of our show is this nucleus of hope," Ann Druyan, creator, writer, executive producer and director of the show — and Sagan's widow — says in the video about the new season.

To sum up the upcoming season, "Things are about to get epic," Tyson says in the trailer.

James Corden is known for his larger-then-life personality, but was also once known for his large-than-life frame.

The actor, comedian and host rose to fame on the TV show Fat Friends, a show about a group of overweight friends struggling with their body shape.

He then went onto play Smithy in the hit show Gavin and Stacey, another character known for his large physique.

But things have since changed for James, who since making it big in the US, has lost an impressive five stone.

The TV-star’s transformation saw his career skyrocket and his frame slim down, but how did he do it?

To lose five stone and reduce his weight, James cut out snacking and drastically cut out some of his favourite foods.

Speaking to the Daily Mail he said: “I’ve cut out sugar and bread, and eat only eat at mealtimes now.

“I didn’t realise before that it wasn’t OK to constantly graze all day, that this wasn’t a thing and that it was frowned upon.”

James’ self-confessed food “nemesis” was bread, revealing he once used to gorge on warm, fresh bread and bread baskets.

He also enlisted the help of nutritional therapist Amelia Freer, who has worked with James’ friend Victoria Beckham.

Along with cutting out carbs, James also revealed that he is a big fan of the workout Plyojam.

Devised by celebrity trainer Jason Layden, the workout is based on dancing and has a fun feel, a more approachable way to get into exercise.

Talking to The Sun, trainer Jason said: “I will never forget the first time I met James.

“There were 50 people in the class and he showed up with a big smile on his face in these hip-hop low pants like MC Hammer.

“He came and he was on it, he was in the front row and ready to go.

“He was loving it, with a big smile on his face. He came in like a regular dude, but a dude that knows how to dance.”

Before cutting out carbs and embarking on Plyojam James tried multiple times to shed the pounds, with his hard work finally paying off and seeing him lose five stone.

Another TV star who recently shed an impressive amount of weight is Johnny Vegas.

The comedian has forged a long and successful career due to his larger than life personality and persona.

Taking to Twitter last week he shocked fans by showing off his impressive weight loss.

SpaceX launched 10 Iridium satellites today (July 25) in the seventh and penultimate launch required to complete the communications company’s new constellation.

The launch had a one-second window because of the precision needed for the satellite insertion, according to company spokesperson John Insprucker said during the broadcast. The launch went smoothly, despite the fact that fog obscured the view of the rocket until after lift-off.

SpaceX hoped to complete two separate marine tasks in addition to the launch itself: landing the first stage of the rocket on the droneship "Just Read the Instructions" and catching the rocket's fairing with a second boat, which to date, no launch launch has accomplished. The company knew both boat maneuvers would be tricky today. "The weather in the Pacific is bad," Insprucker said. "We have choppy seas."

"[The conditions are] the worst that we've ever had for trying to get a first stage on the droneship," he continued later in the broadcast. Nevertheless, the company soon confirmed in a tweet that the rocket successfully landed on the droneship — despite some initial confusion due to a lack of lighting on the landing platform.

Spectators had hoped the company would attempt to catch the rocket's fairing with "Mr Steven," its boat equipped with a giant net. Earlier in July, the company tweeted photos of the boat with an upgraded net four times larger than the previous version and stated that it was targeting another recovery attempt for later in the month, and today's launch was the company's last of the month.

SpaceX was not able to specify when it would know whether Mr. Steven was successful, although Insprucker promised an update after the coast period of the mission wrapped up, about 50 minutes after launch, or around 8:30 a.m. EDT.

The Iridium satellites are scheduled to deploy about an hour after launch. Assuming they do so successfully, they will bring the constellation up to 75 satellites, which with ten additional units meant to launch later this year will run tracking procedures on devices connected to the so-called Internet of Things (IoT).

Today's launch followed a launch from the opposite coast on Sunday and will be followed by a third launch currently scheduled for Aug. 2.

Scientists have taken much better stock of our neck of the cosmic woods over the past two decades, as a new NASA video makes clear.

The animation maps out all known near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) — space rocks that get within about 30 million miles (50 million kilometers) of our planet's orbit — from 1999 through January 2018, in roughly 10-year time steps. 

The differences are stark. In 1999, identified NEAs speckled the inner solar system thinly, in a light dusting. Many more were discovered by 2009, and Earth's neighborhood looks absolutely swamped in the present-day portion of the video. [In Pictures: Potentially Dangerous Asteroids]

But even that last frame doesn't impart just how crowded near-Earth space actually is. Astronomers have detected just 18,000 near-Earth objects (NEOs, a classification that also includes comets) to date, out of a population thought to number in the millions.

There's good news, though: NASA scientists have found and tracked about 95 percent of the potential civilization-enders out there — rocks at least 0.6 miles (1 km) wide — and none of them pose a threat to Earth for the foreseeable future.

The space agency's NEO Observations Program is also working to discover and track 90 percent of the NEOs that are at least 450 feet (140 meters) wide by 2020 — a very ambitious goal laid out by Congress in 2005. It would take something of a miracle for NASA to do this on the prescribed timetable, however; scientists estimate that just one-third of the 450-footers out there have been spotted to date.

The NEO Observations Program, which was created in 1998, is responsible for about 90 percent of all 18,000-odd NEO discoveries, NASA officials said.

The research and data-analysis hub of the program is the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), which is located at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. (CNEOS was originally known as the Near-Earth Object Program Office; the name was changed in 2016.)

"We compute high-precision orbits for all asteroids and comets and map their positions in the solar system, both forward in time to detect potential impacts, and backward to see where they've been in the sky," CNEOS Director Paul Chodas said in a statement Monday (July 23). "We provide the best map of orbits for all known small bodies in the solar system."

The newly released video also maps all of the known asteroids in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter, and it's a sight to behold. The belt is home to the vast majority of all known space rocks, the current tally of which tops 780,000, according to NASA researchers.

NASA’s next solar spacecraft can withstand so much heat that even a blowtorch won’t disturb the probe’s shield, a new video shows.

The Parker Solar Probe — which is targeted for liftoff sometime between Aug. 6 and 19 from Space Launch Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida — will be the first NASA spacecraft to "touch" the sun, or to directly contact the coronal material in the sun's fiercely hot upper atmosphere. During its seven-year mission orbiting the sun, Parker will swoop as close as 4 million miles (6.4 million kilometers) to the sun's photosphere, which is the layer of the star we think of as the surface.

The centerpiece of Parker's sun protection is a special heat shield that uses a carbon-composite foam sandwiched between two carbon plates, NASA officials said in a statement. "It's very lightweight, as you can see," Betsy Congdon, lead engineer for the heat shield at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (JHAPL) in Baltimore, said in the new NASA video. She lifted the bulky shield fragment easily with her hands. "Here I've got a blowtorch," she added, "and I'm going to use it to get the front surface glowing hot, and then we'll have a nice demonstrator come in and touch this at the back."

In less than a minute, Congdon had the shield glowing red with the help of her blowtorch, which boosted the temperature at the front of the shield to a couple of hundred degrees Fahrenheit, she said. During the real mission, she added, the shield will need to withstand temperatures of about 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit (1,370 degrees Celsius).

At Congdon's invitation, Curtis Wilkerson, an engineer for the probe who also works at JHAPL, gently touched the back of the shield (the side not being blowtorched). "What does it feel like?" Congdon said.

"Pretty cool," Wilkerson reported.

"Nice and cool, he says, which is just how we like it — keeping the spacecraft cool," Congdon said as the video concluded.

In the statement released with the video, NASA officials added that, despite traveling through the coronal zone, which can reach temperatures of several million degrees (whether Fahrenheit or Celsius), Parker will not melt. Why? The answer lies in the difference between heat and temperature. Temperature measures how fast particles move, according to NASA, whereas heat measures how much energy those particles transfer. "Since space is mostly empty, there are very few particles that can transfer energy to the spacecraft," NASA officials said in the statement.

One of Parker's main science goals is to help scientists better understand the extreme temperature differences between the sun's corona (the star's outer atmosphere) and the much lower temperatures deeper inside the sun. 

While the core is a blistering 27 million degrees Fahrenheit (15 million degrees Celsius), temperatures in the photosphere are only 10,000 degrees F (5,500 degrees C). Then temperatures climb again in the corona to several million degrees (F and C). The temperature profile is puzzling because it's unclear why the outer atmosphere and core are so much hotter than the photosphere. 

With more knowledge about how the sun's energy gets transferred, scientists hope to make better predictions about solar activity. Solar activity affects how much radiation the sun transfers through the solar system, and radiation can affect human health in space as well as satellite electronics.

The actor has achieved an impressive weight loss in recent years, dropping from almost 16 stone to 12 stone.

Personal trainer Harry Smith recently shared incredible before and after pictures of Danny, who he worked with in 2016.

Writing on his trainer’s website, Danny detailed his body transformation journey.

He revealed: “For most of my life, I have been overweight, at times even obese,” Danny wrote in a candid post on trainer Harry’s website.

“I had doctors telling me that if I don’t start to lose weight and have a healthy lifestyle I could be faced with serious consequences.

“Before working with Harry I had been training in the gym for years and done successfully well on my own to transform my bodyweight from just under 16 stone to 12 stone.”

“I had a 12 week goal which I wanted to achieve, and with Harry’s guidance, knowledge and support, I absolutely smashed my 12 week objective and we are now looking to smash another 12 week plan.

“My body fat has decreased, I have become more vascular, I feel stronger and fitter in the gym. My confidence has grown since I have started to see results.”

Explaining how Danny achieved the body transformation, Harry explained he followed a calorie restricted diet.

“He followed a flexible diet where he could have treats but he still made sure he ate all his fruit and veg every day. 

“He was bang on his calorie target every day. This is really hard to do, especially when life happens.

“There was a couple of weeks where we had to work around some really stressful events too but he still nailed it.”

Another example of a celebrity transforming her body is Kerry Katona’s weight loss.

The television personality, who rose to fame as part of girl band Atomic Kitten, showcased her two stone weight loss earlier this year.

Now she has lost a further eight pounds, or half a stone, according to The Sun, through visiting a boot camp in Marbella.

As part of the regime at the camp, Kerry did an swimming pool based exercise known as Float Fit.

She posted about the exercise, which is done on a paddle board, on her Instagram account.

Sharing a series of pictures of her in a bikini on the board, she captioned the image: “Don’t ask!! @holisticbootcamp floatfit with @jsimzy”.

She also posted a bikini clad mirror selfie of herself showing off her toned abs at the end of her visit. She captioned it: “Feeling fitter… and sooo much more toned and ripped!!

“When we were in Barbados we did yoga every morning.”

She also revealed her favourite from of exercise to keep trim.

“I’ve been doing a lot of core work after having my third baby I did feel quite weak.

“Me and my mum do the Reformer Pilates, which just gives me more energy and strength to be able to look after my big, heavy long babies, so I have to be strong for that.”

Hurricanes are devastating for the populations they hit, not only because of the damage caused by winds but also because of the increased risk of diseases after the storm passes. To help people affected by these storms, researchers used data from NASA’s Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite to make predictions about cholera outbreaks.

Cholera, according to the Mayo Clinic, is a bacterial disease that spreads through contaminated water or food. Symptoms of cholera can include nausea, vomiting, severe diarrhea, dehydration and even death if left untreated. There were more than 130,000 reported cases of cholera worldwide in 2016, according to the World Health Organization, but estimates of the true number of cholera cases are much higher – between 1.4 million to 4 million cases annually.

"In the countries less developed with infrastructure that is not the equivalent, let's say, of Europe or the United States or Canada, then, the population that has to rely on river water or pond water is at risk for cholera," microbiologist Rita Colwell said in a new video from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. She is a microbiologist and professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, and at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. According to NASA, cholera outbreaks come in two types: endemic (or seasonal), or an epidemic that happens suddenly. If the use of drinking water and its availability change after a natural disaster, human behavior will also change as people seek out water. But it is difficult to predict the risk of cholera because little information is available on pathogen abundance in local water systems as well as on larger trends in weather and climate.

Researchers focused on Haiti, which suffered a massive cholera outbreak in 2010 after a difficult year of natural disasters. A devastating earthquake and an aftershock hit Haiti in January 2010, followed by the hottest summer in generations. A cholera outbreak occurred in October of the same year, just weeks before Hurricane Tomas grazed the island and unleashed heavy rains.

"The data that we were able to pull together showed that in 2010 it was the hottest summer in 50 years. And then, as if that weren't enough, there was a hurricane that skirted the island, but it dumped the heaviest rainfall in 50 years," added Colwell, who is the former director of the National Science Foundation.

Antarpreet Jutla, a hydrologist at West Virginia University, was part of a team that created an algorithm to determine the risk of cholera. This gave the researchers "the first clues" on the cholera outbreak in Haiti after the earthquake, he said in the NASA video. Then, Hurricane Matthew swept through Haiti in 2016.

By that time, the GPM mission had been in space for two years, tracking global snowfall and precipitation. Jutla's team reused their cholera prediction algorithm, adding improved satellite data from the GPM mission, to see where cholera might occur. The model includes factors such as monthly air temperature, population density, precipitation, the severity of the natural disaster and availability of infrastructure for water, sanitation and hygiene.

"We were able to, in real time, predict the risk of cholera infection in human population at least four weeks in advance. We did the same thing for Yemen," Jutla said. "We knew there was a mass movement of human population due to civil unrest in that part of the world, and then we had very heavy precipitation. And then we immediately started monitoring conditions. And that basically converged to give us a risk on where and when this disease will lock in on human population."

The researchers said they hope to improve the spatial scale of the model as they include more data sets. "I think we can predict and prevent [cholera], and I'd like to see that happen very quickly, in the next three to five years, and I'd like to see the satellite system to be part of the regular public health tools so that we can do prediction as well as the tracking of epidemics that's done traditionally now," Colwell said.

Writer/director James Gunn has been removed from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and his relationship with Marvel and parent company Walt Disney have been "severed," according to a Disney statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.  The statement comes after a series of tweets from Gunn resurfaced that Disney called "offensive".

"The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him," said Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn in a statement.

Last evening, Gunn responded to the years-old tweets resurfacing on Twitter, then deleted, saying:

Many people who have followed my career know when I started, I viewed myself as a provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo. As I have discussed publicly many times, as I’ve developed as a person, so has my work and my humor.

It’s not to say I’m better, but I am very, very different than I was a few years ago; today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger. My days saying something just because it’s shocking and trying to get a reaction are over.

In the past, I have apologized for humor of mine that hurt people. I truly felt sorry and meant every word of my apologies.

For the record, when I made these shocking jokes, I wasn’t living them out. I know this is a weird statement to make, and seems obvious, but, still, here I am, saying it.

Anyway, that’s the completely honest truth: I used to make a lot of offensive jokes. I don’t anymore. I don’t blame my past self for this, but I like myself more and feel like a more full human being and creator today. Love you to you all.

Jamie Brooks, 34, once weighed a whopping 36 stone, working full-time as a chef and gorging on food at work.

After work he could live on a diet of takeaways and sugary drinks, piling on the pounds and putting himself at serious risk of a host of health issues.

Jamie would also scoff jumbo-sized packs of Galaxy Minstrels in one sitting, surviving on fast and processed food.

Making his life even more difficult, he had to buy 7XL clothes from a specialist supplier and had given up on finding love.

He finally decided to lose the weight after his friend, van driver Neil Williamson, bombarded him with text messages every day for weeks.

The messages called Jamie a “fat f***” and said “you’ll be dead by the time you’re 40“.

Realising something had to change Jamie embarked on an incredible weight-loss journey, cutting down to under 1000 calories a day and stepping up his exercise regime.

For the first two months on his weight-loss journey, Jamie restricted himself to 640 calories a day, decided for him in a specialist dietician consultation with Ideal Weight.com.

He ate breakfasts such as porridge and had meal replacement shakes during the day, followed by balanced meals at night like spaghetti bolognese.

The weight quickly started to drop, with Jamie upping his calorie intake to between 800 and 1,000 after two months.

After giving himself a break on a higher calories intake, he then dropped back down to 640 for two more months.

After a year, Jamie had lost a staggering 21 stone, more than half his body weight.

Following his weight loss his confidence grew, and he found love with his partner Melanie.

On his staggering weight loss Jamie said: “I just got bigger and bigger as a child, I was never slim.

“I would combat the embarrassment by laughing it off and I’d just be the fat jolly one of the group.

“It took the full six weeks to motivate me to do something but I’m so glad I did. Neil has saved my life, I can’t thank him enough.

“I never made plans for the future as I always thought I would be dead at a young age, but now I’m healthy and have an amazing girlfriend – I’m a new man.”

Another chef who more than halved in size was celebrity chef and TV personality Tom Kerridge.

Once weighing in at 30 stone, Tom has dropped 12 stone over the years.

It all started around Tom’s 40th birthday when he decided to take measures to improve his health.

Are two different types of stars actually the same thing? Recent research shows that two kinds of exotic stars — known as pulsars and magnetars — may be a single type of star, but at different stages of its lifetime, according to a new NASA video.

Both pulsars and magnetars are kinds of neutron stars. A neutron star is the leftover core after a much more massive star runs out of fuel and explodes in a supernova. Gravity from that explosive event compresses the star into an object the size of a small city; a single teaspoon of matter from the neutron star has as much mass as a mountain, according to the video.

Neutron stars rotate superfast, ranging from 10 times a second to 700 times a second, NASA officials said in the video. Some of these neutron stars, called radio pulsars, emit radio waves like clockwork. Pulsars also possess strong magnetic fields, though these are not as strong as those found in magnetars. This kind of star has the strongest known magnetic field in the universe, some trillion times stronger than the magnetic field of our sun. Magnetars also send out extreme outbursts of X-ray and gamma-ray light. [Why Magnetars Should Freak You Out]

Starting in the 1970s, scientists characterized pulsars and magnetars as different types of objects. But that picture changed in recent years, when research revealed that pulsars and magnetars are likely both evolutionary stages in a neutron star's lifetime. It's unclear which comes first, the magnetar or the pulsar, according to the video; perhaps magnetars lessen their emissions of X-rays and gamma-rays to become pulsars. Or perhaps pulsars gradually generate a magnetic field to become magnetars.

"It's a bit tricky to observe these restless bodies," Tom Prince, a physics professor at the California Institute of Technology and a senior research scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said in the video.

"First, magnetars don't last long — just a year to a few years, before colossal waves of X-rays dissipate the magnetic energy," he added. "Second, pulsars are really quite old by our standards. One of the most famous pulsars, the Crab pulsar for example, exploded in the early 1000s. Third, it [a supernova doesn't happen often. The last known supernova to explode in our vicinity occurred in 1987 in a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way."

Prince made note of recent NASA missions that gave more information about neutron stars. These projects include the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and the now-deceased Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). Another important contributor is the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton observatory, Prince said. 

"Observations have included seismic waves rippling through a magnetar, a cloud of high-energy particles called a wind nebula around a magnetar and a magnetar that is also the slowest-spinning neutron star ever detected," NASA officials said.

Fern Britton, 61, has certainly turned heads with her weight loss over the years.

The television personality made headlines in 2008, when she lost five stone weight loss following a gastric band operation.

She is best known for presenting This Morning between 1999 and 2009, co-presenting with Phillip Schofield.

The former This Morning presenter made a return to the show today, stunning viewers with her youthful appearance and healthy looking figure.

One tweeted: “@Fern_Britton does she b*****y age ? Such a lovely looking lady.”

Speaking about her decision in a 2011 interview with the Mail Online, Fern said she had a gastric band to improve her health.

“I had the gastric band for health reasons,” she told the publication.

“My cholesterol was high. My knee joints were starting to hurt.I wasn’t able to run.

“I was approaching 50 and I thought: ‘Do you know what? I’m going to be different when I’m 50.’”

She explained that she had tried exercising to get rid of the weight, but it was not effective.

“I was cycling like mad and nothing was happening. My GP said I was a good candidate for a band, so I went ahead.”

Fern described herself as “incredibly fit” following her procedure.

She said: “For me it’s worked. I’ve got good cholesterol now. I’m incredibly fit.

She also admitted to comfort eating in the past: “Maybe eating was a self-comfort.”

Another example of a television star slimming down is Tom Kerridge’s weight loss.

Tom Kerridge, 44, is a famous television chef and pub owner.

He has undergone a drastic weight loss in recent years.

Once weighing in at 30 stone, Tom has dropped 12 stone over the years.

The 6ft 3in chef now looks much slimmer than he used to and weighs just 18 stone.

A daily swimming habit has helped Tom to lose the drastic amount of weight. “My alarm wakes me up at 6.15 every morning and I go to the swimming pool at a hotel up the road,” he told The Telegraph.

Weight loss can be particularly hard in summer, when social commitments increase and the warm weather encourages plans.

One thing the warm weather also encourages is drinking, which can be detrimental to achieving weight-loss goals.

A recent survey by Finder.com revealed that two thirds of Britons have no idea how man calories are in common alcoholic drinks.

Some boozy beverages can pack in as much as 155 calories per unit, with the average Briton consuming 1,815 calories per week from alcohol alone, equal to one pound of fat.

However, there are many options for drinking this summer that are more waistline friendly.

Brandy came out on top as the spirit with the lowest calorie count, containing just 50 calories per 25ml shot.

Dark in colour, brandy is usually thought of to contain more calories, but it actually packs in less than both vodka and gin.

A close second in the spirits category was vodka, which has 53 calories a shot.

Other clear spirits such as gin, white rum and tequila were also proven to be some of the best options for dieters, all having under 60 calories per shot.

Drunk with diet mixers or soda water, these spirits can offer a safer alternative to calorie-packed lagers and ciders, and even darker spirits such as whisky.

Surprisingly champagne fell in the same calorie category as clear spirits, having just 59 calories per unit.

A small glass of champagne, or indeed prosecco or cava, is the perfect summer tipple for Britons who are looking to shed pounds.

With only a few more calories than its sparkling counterparts, a small glass of dry white wine will only pack in around 85 calories.

Lengthening a small glass of white wine with soda water will keep the drink going for longer without adding any extra calories, perfect for summer dieters.

Wine and spirits aside, summer is more often than conducive to beer and cider drinking.

While beer knowingly packs in a lot more calories than white wine and spirits, there are certain beers that are more waist-line friendly.

When it comes to beer, Carling came out on top as the brew with the lowest amount of calories, with 195 calories a pint.

Kronenbourg 1664, in comparison, packs in around 250 calories.

Other ways to cut out as many calories as possible include opting for diet mixers or soda water.

The survey also revealed that dieters should stay away from sugar-laden alcopops, which can contain a staggering 155 calories per unit.

The 47-year-old posted two images to his account, revealing one of his diet secrets.

His transformation was well-received by fans, who praised Johnny for his hard work and new physique.

Posting to his 353,000 followers, the comedian shared a photo of his slimmed-down self, along with what he now eats for breakfast.

Joking with his followers, he wrote: “It’s a far cry from a Thatto Heath fry up….ooh you’ve changed Vegas.

“Apologies fellow tweeters, busy of late and treating our chats like a bacon butty, sadly an all too rare a treat of late x” (sic).

The slimmed-down selfie showed off Johnny’s impressive weight loss, looking significantly leaner than his previous public appearances.

The second image showed how Johnny had swapped his bacon butties for cleaner, healthier options, helping him to shed the pounds.

His breakfast consisted of some folded eggs, slices of avocado and tinned tomato – packed with healthy fats and lean protein.

The post quickly gained attention, with some of Johnny’s thousands of followers leaving messages of praise and support for the TV star.

One fan wrote: “You’re looking amazing, Johnny!”, with another commenting, “Good for you buddy, keep it up – you look well.”

One fan shared her own weight loss goals with Johnny, writing: “I think you look fab. I’ve been wanting to lose weight for ages but cos I’m older, don’t want to look like a saggy mess. Well if you can then maybe I can too.”

Another celebrity who revealed her impressive weight loss is Emmerdale star Lisa Riley.

Talking on ITV’s Lorraine show last week, the Emmerdale star revealed the method she used to shed weight.

Candidly talking to Lorraine she revealed she lost the weight due to “changing her lifestyle” not doing any short-term or fad diets.

She also shared the one exercise she owes her new body to – zumba.

The actress was on the show to discuss her new book, Lose Weight for Life and her first book, Honesty Diet.

She also revealed her daily diet, having hot water and lemon with porridge and honey for breakfast, and butternut squash with coriander soup and oatcakes for lunch.

For dinner she has garlic and chili cod with roasted spinach and cauliflower, a far cry from her original diet, which saw the British star eating four slices of white toast, Coco Pops with full-fat milk and coffee with sugar.
