Virgil “Gus” Grissom was one of NASA’s original Mercury 7 astronauts. He became the second American to go to space on July 21, 1961.
In this official NASA photo taken in 1961 the pilot of the Mercury-Redstone 4 spaceflight, Grissom wears his spacesuit. Grissom died on January 27, 1967, in the Apollo 1 spacecraft fire at Kennedy Space Center.
