Weight loss is often a long and challenging process, with many dieters choosing to give up their favourite foods in favour of healthy, low-calorie options.

But something that can prohibit weight loss is actually alcoholic beverages, with many drinks packing in hundreds of unnoticed calories.

A recent survey by Finder.com revealed that two thirds of Britons have no idea how man calories are in common alcoholic drinks.

This includes many who dangerously underestimated the amount – 2.7 million people think there are less than 40 calories in a pint of lager, despite the correct figure being over 200.

According to the findings, millennials tend to underestimate the calories in drinks whereas baby boomers overestimate, and despite drinking twice as much alcohol every week, men are 20 per cent more likely to be clueless.

The report also highlighted the calories in different drinks, including surprising stats such as Sambuca having 45 per cent more calories than other spirits.

The survey hinted that the UK’s growing weight problem could be linked to Briton’s love for booze.

The average Briton consumes 21 units of booze a week, with a unit being an average of 85 calories, adding up to an extra 1,750 calories a week.

One pound of fat is equal to around 3,500 calories, meaning Britons are consuming a pound in fat worth of alcohol every two weeks.

By minimising alcohol intake or cutting it out entirely, the average person could lose 27 pounds in a year.

A pint of lager topped the calorie count list with a whopping 230 calories per pint, with 65 per cent of Britons having no idea of the calorie count.

Cider and Guinness were closely behind lager, with 216 and 218 calories, respectively.

Another British summertime favourite, wine, also placed in the top 10 most calorie-packed drinks.

A medium glass of wine (175ml) has around 159 calories in it, with 59 per cent of those surveyed unaware of the calorie intake.

One of the lowest amount of calories found was gin, with only 52. But served as a double measure with topic, the amount significantly rises to 160 calories.
