Apple cider vinegar isn’t just a trend or a fad: it has been scientifically proven to help people lose weight. 

The Central Research Institute in Japan undertook a double-blind 12 week trial on obese Japanese subjects. 

It revealed the effect vinegar has on the reduction of body fat mass. 

The subjects were randomly assigned to three groups of similar body weight, body mass index, and waist circumference.

The subjects in each group ingested 500 ml daily of a beverage containing either 15 ml of vinegar, 30 ml of vinegar, or 0 ml of vinegar. 

Apple cider vinegar is usually taken in drink form: one to two teaspoons in eight ounces water. 

The results of the study in Japan revealed body weight, BMI, visceral fat area, waist circumference, and serum triglyceride levels were significantly lower in both vinegar intake groups than in the placebo group. 

Thus revealing daily intake of vinegar might be useful in the prevention of metabolic syndrome by reducing obesity.

If you are new to taking apple cider vinegar, current recommendations say to start off with one teaspoon (5ml) to see how you tolerate it. 

Studies have found that apple cider vinegar helps you to lose weight because of the acid in the liquid, known as acetic acid.

The acid increases an enzyme AMPK, which scientists claim increases fat burning and decreases fat and sugar production.

Another study has found that people who drank a tablespoon of cider vinegar in water had lower glucose levels.

However, there could be a down side to taking apple cider vinegar – it could harm your teeth. 

A lab study took enamel from wisdom teeth and immersed it in different vinegars with pH levels ranging from 2.7 to 3.9. 

The vinegars led to a 1 to 20 per cent loss of minerals from the teeth after just four hours. 

While the experiment was carried out in a lab and the mouth contains saliva which helps neutralise acidity, theres still evidence that large amounts of vinegar an cause dental erosion. 

But this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consume apple cider vinegar – simply drink your weight loss mix through a straw to minimalist the effect.
