Fitness and staying slim is important to all Britons, for our health and happiness, but for these young athletes it is their whole career.

The GB and NI athletics team travel the globe winning gold medals and breaking world records.

How to they keep themselves in peak physical condition to win these impressive titles?

Katarina Johnson-Thompson, 25, won gold in the heptathlon at the 2018 Commonwealth Games

“It’s about being sensible, I don’t follow a strict regime, I don’t ever deny myself any cravings but it’s about doing things in small quantities.

“I used worry about how I looked when I was younger, when I was in 2012 I was really self-conscious. It was my first ever international, in a huge stadium with millions of people behind the camera and you have to go out in little knickers and a bra top and after that it sort of gave me confidence. If I can do that at 19, I can do anything.

“I know that this is my body, I’ve grown through puberty now, this is what I look like, this is the body I need to use.

“I like to have granola and yoghurt, that’s my favourite breakfast.

“When I’m trying to be health conscious I just make sure I get every single colour in the bowl, I eat kale, I make sure my bowl looks like a rainbow and try and get all my colours in.”

Adam Gemili, 24, won gold in the 2017 World Championships

“I don’t massively keep track of my calorie count, a lot of people do, but as long as I feel happy and I feel in good shape, I’m happy.

“Everyone always says what kind of food do you eat you must be eating really healthy – everyone knows the right things and wrong things to eat, everyone knows not to eat rubbish and to eat a good source protein, a good bit of carbohydrate a good bit of veg and stuff and that’s about it.

“Diet is massively underrated in terms of performance. Exercise great for fitness but to lose weight and keep healthy its all about diet.

“I like chicken, veg, I eat lamb, beef, steak – I have steak once or twice I week, fish or chicken.”

Laura Sugar, 27, won silver at the IPC European Championships

“With meat and veg you can cook something up from scratch quite quickly.

“I’ll have quite a light breakfast, maybe granola, and I’ll train and I’ll have a low carb lunch, for instance chicken and veg and bake it with some spices on it. I might put some pasta with it if I’ve had a really heavy session.

“And dinner I’ll have some meat and veg or some fish and veg. I do try and have a few vegetarian meals a week.”

Andrew Pozzi, 25, indoor World and European Champion at 60 metres hurdles

“I like to have a lot of quark because its great protein. It’s a thick protein yogurt, it’s really good for after you train because it’s light – it’s not like a massive meal that gets in the way when you go to train again.

“I’ll have a light breakfast, then immediately after training I get some protein, then my biggest meal is lunch and then I have a small meal for dinner. I have lots of pasta and rice.”

Brian Gregan, 28, Irish sprinter

“I would eat a very balanced diet, a lot of fruit and veg and a good source of meat and protein.

“I snack a lot so quark or a yogurt is great because I can pop it in my bag and have it after training.

“What is the point of going to the gym if you’re not going to eat afterwards and build the muscle? It’s just a waste.”

Dina Asher-Smith, 22, British record holder for the 100 metres and 200 metres

“I have to make sure my diet is high protein.

“You have to keep it balanced, a sensible diet, and people who don’t do sport have to have a much more restricted diet.”
